 Sorry I put this in the report section but I can't attach pics in the Q&A forum. Thanks for moving it,,,whoever did :P
Will this whole tip ring need to be replaced? The inner black plastic thing(?) came out.
Its a delicate rod (and my favourite) so wouldn't want to do the job myself.
Shimano UK suggest I send it to them to replace it but postage would be a fair bit, anyone had experience with these?
rod tip ring?

Hey Col,
Had a similiar situation myself and decided to fish away with it as was. The line on my reel was frayed for the entire length of the cast I was making. Not worth it man if you lose a hefty for the sake of 20/30 quid.
Having said that though a buddy suggested I would have been OKish if i'd coated it in wax and then varnished the wax which actually sounds kind of sensible...!

tip ring
you will have to change the whole thing they are not expensive and you will need a thing of hot melt glue.heat the ring over a candle and it will just slide off cut some of the glue and place it into the sleeve of the new tip ring heat over the candle flame and slide onto the rod tip make sure its straight wait about 10mins and ur ready to fish again

I think most decent tackle shops will replace tip rings on the spot if they have the right ring size for the rod. Don't think they're usually whipped on, just glued. Only takes a couple of minutes and not pricey. Well worth it instead of shredding your line which you probably will without the inner parts.

Col,
Be careful with heat on the tip, you can do a lot of damage if the blank tip gets to hot.....this is how you do it......take a piece of thin string or thick thread and tie it to the tip ring...leave a length long enough to hook the other end onto a door handle or something similar, hold the rod and pull the thread or string in a straight line with the rod..at the same time hold a lighter flame under the tube of the tip guide, move it back and forth to spread the heat.....the instant the glue melts the tip will come off and be left hanging on the string/thread...this way the blank is not under heat for to long and you wont effect the resin in the rod tip.
Dont use pliers or twist the heated guide tip off, this can loosen the weave of the blank fabric and you end up with what looks like a 12ft fine tip paint brush :(
A new tip is easy to attach, just make sure the tube size is right and the tip guide itself is in line.......for as long as need be until the glue is dry.
Tom.

Col, its an easy job to do yourself but make sure you get the correct size tip ring. I would be surprised if your local tackle dealer cant put you right. Try Viking tackle since you are in the area.
This is just another advantage of buying local and getting to know the dealer.
