People: Just me.

Duration: 3-6pm.

Tide: Flooding

Weather: Rain, Rain, Rain.

Bait: Mackerel, Sandeel, Squid, Mussel

Rigs: 2-Hook Flappers

Results: Wrasse

Report:

Took a mad notion today and headed out to see if I remembered how to catch fish  . Stopped at a piece of coastline I hadn’t fished before. Mixed ground, some rough looking areas with rocks and weed plentiful, interspersed with small patches of sand. Thought the sandy areas might produce a few flats and as I had a few frozen wraps in the bag, decided to give it a go. Picked-up a few mussels just before they got flooded over.

Lobbed a 2-hook flapper with lug and mussel onto one of the sandy bits. The only action for the 1st hour or so was the non-stop rain  . Having the rod sitting high in the rest to avoid a bank of weed right in front of me and the tide flooding nicely, zippy got a nice bang :D . After his initial scrap, a nice little wrasse just under the 2lb mark made a welcome appearance onto the shoreline. Certainly didn’t expect the wrasse to venture into the sandbanks – the lump of mussel was obviously too much to resist. Quick pic and back he went.

Varied the baits a bit to see if I could tempt anything else. Mackerel, lug, sandeel & squid all came back untouched :( . At least I wasn’t plagued by crabs.

The wind picked up and the weed started to drift in. Decided to use up the last few mussels and out went the flapper again to a different patch. I was just packing up various bits and pieces when zippy got another rattle. Grabbed the rod and applied pressure. Another wrasse. Steered him through the maze of weed and safely landed :) .

With the amount of weed now around, I didn’t fancy my chances of landing any more fish, so packed-up and headed for home. No flatties, but happy-out with a couple of wrasse. Always nice not to blank on a new mark  .

Martin.

PS. I realise the dates are wrong on the pics, but it’s been a while since I used it and never checked before using it    .

It's been a long time since you were out, at least you were rewarded for putting up with the downpour!!!
