Strangford Lough mullet,5-10-08

#1 Post by Davy Murdoch »

People:me and davy mac

Duration:2hrs

Tide:high

Weather:ddclear and calm

Bait:bread
dd
Rigs:floats

Results:mullet

Report:It was such a good day myself and Davy mac headed over to Strangford lough hoping there would be a few big mullet moving around due to the slightly warmer weather. It was Davy`s 1st time trying for mullet so i hoped to show why im so addicted to them :)
When we arrived at our choosen mark it looked like it might be a waste of time as we only saw 3 fish moving.I think it might have been the amount of cold freshwater pouring in so we moved a mile along the coast to a spot where the freshwater doesn`t affect the fish.
There was a bit of a ripple on the water so it was hard to spot the fish from the shore but then we saw some nice mullet 100yards offshore so we waded out to have a crack at them. When we reached them and positioned ourselves uptide we realized there was alot more fish than we first thought,we recon there could have been as many as 200 in the area and all looked a very nice size. We couldn`t see if they were feeding but there was alot of splashing on the surface so it was just a case of casting towards the nearest fish and hope it was hungry :)
I didn`t wait too long for my first bite which buried my float and when i struck i could tell it was a nice fish as it had weight to it.After a good scrap i slid the net under a very nice fat mullet which took the scales to 5lb on the button :D specimen mullet number 5 for the year, could this year get any better :D well yes actually  i only waited 20mins for my next bite, which was on sunken bread this time but the hook came out after 3 seconds :(
Davy mac had 1 mullet come up and attack his float but unfortunately that was the only bit of interest he had.Shortly after that i had another bite on sunken bread, this fish put up a better fight than the last and also had weight to it and after a very good fight it was in the net. This time the scales bounced to 5.25lb :D specimen number 6 and my 3rd biggest this year 8) That was the last fish but to be honest i didn`t care,2 specimens in 1 session was good enough for me :D
I hope i get another few sessions like that before the seasons over.might have to head over after work tomorrow if the weather is decent.

If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

headed over again last night,6-10-08,and tonight 7-10-08.
last night i was on my own but had no luck, prob cos there was an onshore wind making spotting fish hard.but i did see a few and one went for my float and a couple took some free bread, but they disapeared soon after :(

tonight i was joined by ronald.spotting fish was alot easier but there wasn`t many around to spot.the rain was pouring down but we stuck it out until it was too dark.there had been a couple of fish moving infront of me but they didn`t seem very active on the surface so i used a piece of sunken bread to see if that would work.i was just about to call it a day cos i was soaked and i could hardly see my float, when suddenly my float dipped a bit but it was so hard to see it that i wasn`t sure if it really did or not then it went right under and i was into a fish :)
ronald chirped in something about it being a cow cos i was milking it  but it was actually putting up a decent scrap.i didn`t bother taking a photo cos it was too wet to take my camera out so i just weighed it before returning it.the scales went to a healthy 3lb 13oz,not bad.i finally hit my target of 30 mullet in a season :D i wonder if i could hit 40 before they vanish altogether
