Has it sorted itself out? if it has then it was probably just something stuck in the reel mechanism.

To check for damage to the pinion gear, pull off some line then tighten the drag. Get someone to pull the line tight and try to reel it in, if the reel handle turns and jumps etc. chances are that you have rounded the shoulders on the pinion gear or damaged the drive plate in the spool.

Try that first to see what happens.

The law in both ROI and the UK is that the vendor (ie the store) is responsible for the quality of the merchandise.

if the problem persists.. check with e-bay about receiving faulty/damaged goods.. you'd be surprised on how good they are at getting things sorted.. just really depends on how long you have had the reel..

take it up with the seller and see was it used or a new reel.. sometimes they are understanding and will take the items back and replace it for you and then send the reel back to where they got it and get it replaced.. the only thing you have to look out for is that you'll have to pay shipping for all transfers.. but as i said. take it up with the seller and see if an arrangement can be seen to..
as far as i can remember there is 90 days to go into dispute over any item on e-bay after that its at the sellers discretion whether to take it up with you..

To be honest, I seriously doubt the reel is at fault. Much more likely that any problem is the result of the spool engaging during a cast or dirt ingress.

I have a number of Abu reels and although they require more maintenence than some other manufacturers products, it is extremely rare to see one that has left the factory with a fault.

The fact that the reel seems to be ok again points towards dirt working its way into and then out of the mechanism and not a mechanical breakage.
