Cushendall Sunday 9th Dec

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

People: me and Cathalger

Duration: several hours

Tide: up to high and a bit after

Weather: fine, bit of a breeze

Bait: fresh lug tipped with mack

Rigs: 2 hook flappers

Report:
the weather was good so I headed to Red Bay on Sunday afternoon in the hope of a cod or two. Regardless, after my 2 blanks last weekend I was determined to catch some fish!
things started off slow with a few tiny bites that resulted in a pin-cod and a palm sized dab.
into darkness saw the best activity when the two rods started nodding away steadily. i kept getting constant decent bangs on both rods but the fish just weren't being readily hooked. got a good few in the end tho with most fish consisting of very silvery pollack averaging about 3/4 of a pound. first pic
best fish was a coley that was in and around the 2lb mark, it was a sturdy decent wee fish. last pic
invested in a pair of fingerless neoprene gloves for the first time and can say that they worked brilliantly 8)
all in all it was an ok session. was hoping for a couple of decent codling but content in the end with just getting something. maybe caught about a dozen fish or more in the end

Hope you dont mind Charlie but I'm stickin in the pic you took of me on Sat with one of those decent coley. At dusk on the Saturday afternoon, Charlie and myself had a bit of crack catching coley on small spinners, got about 20 in half an hour, some of them must have been close on the 2lb, quite a few over 1.5lb, amazing fighters, our only regret was we had no fly rod out.

Sunday we got the fly rods out but the water was very cloudy and neither fly nor spinner did any good. 4 tiddly silvery pollack on spinner. The cloudy water seemed to have the small pollack very pale in colour, seen it happen before at the same spot.
I dont be botherin with the scarf very often but by God its a good job in a cold wind.

Fagan no worries.

Great to get a few fish, especially the coalfish; they are such a clean looking fish and they give a good account of themselves.

Kev, they were plentiful and handy caught on Sat but we couldnt get them on the Sunday, maybe if the water hadnt been so cloudy we'd have got them. Should have had a fly rod out on Sat but wasnt expectin decent fishin to lures at this time of year, Ive found spinning pretty unproductive in winter. Then again I dont try it very often.
