Wicklow Boat Marks (IMELDA) 5/8/2012

#1 Post by JOHN1 »

People:Harry and I

Duration:10 to 7pm

Tide:plenty of it

Weather:overcast/sunny/rain

Bait:macks crab rag

Rigs:various

Results:(8) species. macks,whiting,dabs,LSD'S,Huss,greygurnard,scad,Plaice.

Report:We headed off today with a couple of targets on the cards, first on the wish list was tope and the other was plaice. after bagging a dozen macks for fresh bait we set about looking for the big lads but i dont think they knew we were looking for them :?
The tope were not playing ball, but with the small rods out we did manage to keep very busy with a nice mix of species, including a few scad plenty of small huss to 6lb some nice grey gurnards over a pound and a few whiting over the magical 30cm mark and plenty more mackeral and dogs.after a our fill of this we decided to go after target number two.,
so we headed for a mark that we have not fished in some time because we taught all the Plaice were living on the turbot bank in cork  it was not long before we were getting bites, but the wrong bites whiting and dogs were the first ones to appear
but as if someone hit a switch they went and the plaice and some small dabs appeared first one up was a 36cm cracker to harry,s delight 8) I was very happy with that as my mark was producing the goods, and about 20 minutes later i have a double onboard another 36cm fish with another one about 25cm. after another hour or so and a couple more fish each it was time to call it a day 8)
We will be back.

Nice to see a few decent plaice showing on the east coast. There were a couple of small commercial boats trawling the shoreline from South Greystones to Wicklow harbor last week, so I didn't think there would be too many plaice about. Did you launch in Wicklow?

Trying to do a bit more down that way myself John, I normally launch from Greystones and spin down. It's not too far, but it limits you a bit. The boats were trawling for sure... one about 800M out and the other about 1km. I could see the ropes out each side to the trawl. Hard to figure what there after. It's a real pity. I can't image that there is much left of significant value in that are, but the damage done by discards will take years to replenish... At least you had some decent fishing

proberley prawns, ripping the bottom up and raping the whole ocean floor.dont know if anyone caught the programe on bbc2 other night about prawning in the indian ocean. they pulled a trawl for 3 hours and took about 30 prawns. the amount of tiny fish that was in the net and then shoveled in to bins for poorer to buy was huge the presenter was shocked at the way it ripped up the bottom all for 30 king prawns

What! your Garden gnome hasn't been in Greystones this decade, rephrase that - "I normally drive down and jump on Rob's boat and he brings me to all the great marks"

They could have been. I always thought the mussle boats were bigger. They were 2 small boats. One Red and the Other Blue. Probably 30 footers.

Yesterday was a cracking day for it..... Was staring out the window wishing I was out there for most of the day.... Damn Work :!: All going well I will get out this afternoon.
