Countless Coleys, Red Bay 31/12/11

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

People: just me

Duration: 2 hours

Tide: coming in. approaching high

Weather: breezy overcast warm! 12˚C

Rigs: fly and spinner

Report:
had to make the most of the weather so headed down to the coast to try a bit of fly fishing. have recently started to tie my own flies and so i was eager to give a few of them a bash. and the weather was great.. very mild 8)
i found a sheltered little bay away from the wind and got stuck in. firstly put on a sandeel/minnow blue and silver fly that had been in my box for a while and straight away i could see and feel fish hitting it, happy days. after many hits and no hook-ups :? i had to inspect the fly.. the hook had broken  little wonder.
tied on a sandeel/minnow type white fly that i had tied myself and all changed, it was a fish a cast, every cast, as soon as it hit the water. it was great to out again after weeks of no fishing :!: lovely crystal gin-clear calm water and a steady bend in my rod. :D :D :D
so after a while the white fly was in complete tatters :D and so i decided to put on a shrimp pattern that i had copied from YouTube. same story, a fish a cast. there must have been a shoal right in front of me.
i nearly got fed-up catchin them  and it was hard to drag myself away form the action.. but i decided to pack up and head to a beach to target flatties. but as soon as i got there the rain came on. relentless drizzle, never going to end  and the wind was much worse there too. so i eventually headed home.
i lost count of the number of coleys (30-40) but did manage one pollack. maybe the biggest fish was 1.5lb. not big but all great fun on the fly rod. at the last minute i decided to throw a spinner at them too to see if they would just as eager to take, they were.
great to be in the water again :!: great to get a break in that weather!!
Happy New Year and tight lines folks

It is always very satisfying when you catch on your own flies and you did very well with them. Your pics are brilliant also. Well done in every aspect.

Regards Wez, happy New year.

I'm definitely gonna get the fly gear out next year.

I tied up a pile of sandeel, Shrimp & fry patterns 4-5 years ago and never got round to trying them out.

Theres a few marks round Red Bay where I fancy trying for pollack.

The benefit of fly gear is that you can fish in places which are too snaggy for spinners or even float gear.
Species List 2012 (Me) - Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Plaice, Codling, pollack, dab, SS Scorpion Fish, Ballan Wrasse, Codling.

Species List 2012 (Daniel) - Not got started yet :-(

couldnt recommend it enough mate. the only issue is that its not possible to cover too much water (unless you get out on a small boat) i.e. ur only restricted to where you can wade or just in tight to the shore. this mark was in Red Bay and over stones and weed but it fell away quite quickly into deeper water. it was ideal for the fly to target pollack, coley, wrasse and the like. get those flies out! :D
