Blue Lobster

#1 Post by beebub2 »

On a recent trip to Ballyvaughan, I stopped at Linnane's in New Quay for some grub. There's a fish shop beside the pub on the pier and so I took the kids to it to look at the lobsters while the food was being prepared. In the tank was a bright blue lobster. I've never seen anything like it. Photo is attached, but it doesn't even do it justice. It was bright blue. Amazing looking thing...

Quite a rare sight, only an estimated one in 2–5 million lobsters is blue. A genetic defect causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein. The protein and a red carotenoid molecule known as astaxanthin combine to form a blue complex known as crustacyanin, giving the lobster its blue color.
You should buy it and sell it to an aquarium as it surely would be an attraction

Don't think it's for sale. It's in its own cage and there's a sign on the wall (done by a kid) calling it 'The famous Blue Lobster'.

Seems to be a good few unusual ones out there, recent irish times article on it [url]

Think most of the Irish aquariums have a few different coloured ones
