Co, Sligo September 17th, 21st 2010 & a nice surprise!!!!!!!

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People: Myself

Duration: 17th: 1.5 Hrs & 21st: 1 Hr

Tide: Stranding & Filling

Weather: Heavy Showers & light South East wind

Bait: Limpet & Spinner

Results: 17th: 20 Pollock & 2 Mackerel. 21st: 8 Ballan Wrasse, 2 Pollock,1 John Dory

Report:

17th

Headed out for a few casts on Friday as conditions were perfect were a spot of spinning, got to the mark & set up within twenty minutes. After a couple of casts hooked & landed some nice Pollock to 4 lb :D kept one for dinner & very tasty it was with a few cans!! Caught alot of smaller ones between the 1 & 2lb & two nice Mackerel, one weighed over 2lb. Lost one fine Pollock of about 6 or 7lb which put a great fight until it got down behind a ledge, I tried my best to get her out but no joy she got free but not to worry I’ll get her again

21st

Decided to try for a few Wrasse as I wanted to give a new spot a go that I thought looked good. Got to the mark & baited up with Limpets, dropped down along the edge of the rock & from the first drop was into a fine Ballan of 4 lb :D took a few pics but drying to set the timer on the camera was a night mare it wasn’t working right, think it got one too many soakings. Hooked & landed another seven good fish after, but lost as many as I caught due to the ledges, but will be back again.

The tide was on the flood so I moved to my favourite spinning mark to see if any Pollock were about & first cast was into a small one followed by one to 3lb. Next cast I got a strange take on the spinner which I thought was a Garfish at first as I had seen one chase the spinner near the surface earlier, but I couldn’t believe my eyes when I got it to the surface a Flipping John Dory  Happy Days a new species with a difference. I carefully landed her & was over the moon to actually catch one :D 8)
Little did I think when I was reading Als report a few days ago & seeing the one he caught & that I was going to get one, what’s the chances  . Absolute class looking strange spiky fish, a few quick pics & back it went to fight another day, that’s what I love about fishing you never know what could take your bait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done Brian!!! :D :D :D Congratulations to you mate, that's a very nice John Dory indeed 8) I am well pleased for you, what a species to add to your list. I'm sure that has to be the highlight of all your fishing sessions you've been out on so far this year or close to it anyway. You must have nearly died of shock when you seen it for the first and realised what it was, you must have thought you where dreaming. Now all you have to do is get your double figure pollock and your year will be complete. Excellent pictures and report as well.

Formerly called Saint-Pierre, we know it today as John Dory. According to legend, St-Peter had been asked by the Holy Father to catch the fish and retrieve a gold coin from its mouth.
