Co. Sligo Specimen Wrasse Saturday 10th July 2010

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People: Myself & John

Duration: 1.5 Hours

Tide: Filling

Weather: Overcast Windy & Downpours

Bait: Limpet, Bread & Spinner

Results: Myself: 4 Ballan Wrasse 1 Corkwing Wrasse, John: 1 Pollock

Report:

After work on Saturday we decided to try a few casts as we haven’t been able to fish the mark due to large swells for the past week .
On arrival it looked very choppy with a northerly breeze which meant spinning was going to be tough.

Got the gear ready & started casting but after half an hour I give up between the wind & floating weed it was a night mare , so plan B was to try for a big Wrasse & Mullet over in the sheltered gully.

I headed over & got set up, baited up with a few Limpets dropped down along the rock edge under my feet & the bites came quick but no hook ups then bang a big Wrasse hit the bait hard & took off for the kelp, what a scrap she gave one of the best I’ve had from a big Wrasse :D .
Got her landed, a few quick pics & she tipped the scales slightly over 5lb not the biggest I’ve caught from here but fought just as good 8), Another specimen ( Happy Days).
John had come over to brag about a wee Pollock he got not noticing the big Wrasse swimming in the rock pool next him  !!

Hooked & landed another three but was beginning to wonder where all the Corkwing wrasse had gone as the place was full of them last year & bang on queue I caught one, another species for the list :D .
Tried for a Mullet but they just weren’t having it, with one big fellow just cruising up & down, teasing me it must have been over the 6lb mark, they’d drive you mad to catch  but Il get one yet hopefully sooner rather than later .
Had to retreat as a downpour was on the way, but we were to late getting back to the cars & got soaked to the skin!!

Lovely fish Brian. We tried that mark last week and nearly got washed off the rocks. I've never seen mullet there I must keep an eye out for them next time.

Cheers

Thanks Big Bear, I just use a simple set up of a 1-2oz weights & a single hook on the bottom just leave about a foot between the weight & hook, baited with a few small limets enough to cover all the hook & fish it at different depts till you find the bites!!
