what cast to use?

ok here's a question for ye all..

by the end of 2008 i was getting casts up to 180yrds, then i snapped the cruciate ligament in my left leg in the beginning of 2009, had surgery on it mid 2009, and now recovered, but still not 100% on that knee as muscle is still building on the left leg (after lack of use through 2009),

as i said i was able to get a bit of distance before with pendulum cast, but tried today and was only getting about 100yrds (if even that), due to not being able to put lateral force on left knee.
so what other style of casting can i adopt that would use less/if possible no force on my left knee??
and OTG are out the window too.. (nearly fell over doing that one )

You should just let Chris cast for ya You could try backcasting but id say any power cast will put pressure on the left knee.

adopt the simple off the ground as demonstrated by john holden here, it won't put too much pressure on the left knee while its on the mend, and will still give plenty of distance

I reckon it will be a nightmare casting on your knee at the start but you will probably be surprised how much your knee is recovered and you probably very concious of doing damage to it again... my knee dislocated about 6 years ago and I did that about of weights to build it up again it is probably alot stronger than the other knee...

Is the knee sore when your turning into the cast or is your mind saying thats enough of that.

A bit of both.. I really notice it the next day if you know what I mean..

because Im right footed I lead with my left so I notice the loss of acceleration in my left (it was the left knee that popped) I notice alot of emphasis on my left knee when casting otg and pendulum.. the only other one i can think of is a sort of aerial-ised brighton cast

My knee does sometimes feel like it's going again so I have to give football a miss for a couple of weeks.. I went to a physio for a couple of months and she gave me a good lot of exercises to do that definitely helped I will try and dig them out and send them via email..

your injury was a lot worse than mine though so i'd say it will take a while to get it back to full strength again!

Try the back cast it wont put as much strain on joints ligaments

Hi Steve,

overhead thump should see you right and done properly will easily get you over the 150yards mark ( lead only) lean back into it on ur right foot and bobs ur uncle!

as you know mate most fish are within a 100yards of the shore so a good overhead thump should see you catching, but it you wish to to cast further then some time at a casting meet could help, spend time with someone who knows about casting, but imho the easy cast should be fine for someone of your height and ability

I had back surgery back in 02 and afterwards couldnt cast like I used to and even though im right handed I have to cast like someone who is left handed what ever way my back works it just wont let me cast like I used to I know its your leg but try casting from the oposite side it works for me

Steve all the casts involve transferring the weight of your body from one leg to another, other than just plopping one in at the side. so i think looking for a cast to protect your knee is impossible. I like you have a bad knee for thirty years and it has never hindered me casting or fishing and at this stage i need a new one, i think you would be better off building you knee up with exercise and physiotherapy.

I agree Paul, ive no cruciate ligament in my right knee, and with a bit of work im confident to put all my (quite substantial) weight on it but it took a while to be fully comfortable.
