A vague question will get you vague answers.
Have a look at the catch reports. Do a search for Ray & Huss.
Give your location and even your efforts up to now.

if you want to head up to clifden i will give you 2 marks for ray and huss, got ray up to 8lbs and huss over 10lbs
for ray i use 3 hook mackerel feathers baited with the oldest mackerel you can get,its better then the fresh mackerel
for huss i use a pully rig with 5/0 to 10/0 hooks baited with fresh mackerel, congers at the huss mark as well

i have caught over 60 ray using the mackerel feathers,it works for me,if you think about it the mackerel feather rig is much the same as a 3 hook flapper rig only that there is only six inches between the main line and the hook and the hooks have coloured feathers

anyone that dose not believes it works head up to clifden and i will prove it dose

the more gank it is the better, the stuff i was using was 1 year frozen mackerel that had been thawed and refrozen loads of times, don't use grip leads use beach bomb lead so the lead can move in the tide,i think the wires on the grip leads scare them

i tried 1 rod with fresh mackerel and 1 with the gank mackerel one day,the 2 baits were only a few yards apart and caught 5 ray all on the gank stuff and the fresh stuff was untouched

If distance casting is not an issue then GFKellys tactics will work, hes proved it. On the east coast (and any south coast marks ive fished) most marks for ray and huss require casts in excess if 100 yards where a one or 2 hook clipped down rig will help streamline your bait and get it out to where the fish are feeding. As to whether manky or fresh mackeral is better, its no harm to have both with you and experiment, hard to beat two eels and bound together on a size 2/0 for ray though in my opinion. My favorite all round rig would be an up and over rig 3.5 ft long (7 ft in total), with 2/0 hooks for ray and 4/0 hooks for huss.

discovered this method when i was mackerel bashing and after the bashing i was too lazy to set up a new rig,i just threw the mackerel on the feathers and cast out and had a thornback in less then 10 mins, also had lots of dog fish using it as well
