waterfoot beach co. Antrim sat 31st oct 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and junior

Duration: 4pm to 10pm

Tide: low to high

Weather: flat calm, dry and oddly mild

Bait: mack, squid and razor

Rigs: 3 hook flappers

Results: JORDAN: 5 whiting, 4 flounder and a codling. ME: 3 flounder, 3 coalfish, 2 whiting and 2 codling

Report:
with the dark nights drawing in we decided to give one of our winter flounder marks a go to see how things were doing. we've not fished this beach in months, so we wanted to hit it at low tide to see where the gullys and sand bars have moved to. on arrival we saw the beach had changed completly. it had shallowed out and our favourite lagoon to the left had all but dissappeared :( :( :( there was now a noticeably high bank at the high tide line and the beach in front of us was all but featureless :| :| :| . so it was gonna be a case of trial and error for this session. we both nailed a rod out at distance and ond one 20 yards out into the surf just to make sure we were covering all options. in usual fashion jordan had landed his first fish before i had a bait in the water   2 in fact,, a wee whiting and a flounder :D :D . all 4 rods nodded away the whole session with a nice mix of fish coming our way. i got a wee codling which was proably my biggest fish of the session at 26cm    . but the baits kept getting stripped by the hoards of wee 3 inch whiting that seemed to dominate the beach     jordan got himself sorted out with his chair, lamp and a bag of munchies (well he likes his comforts). and settled down for a comfy sesh :D :D :D :D . odd thing was that all the fish fell to the distance rods. where as before, 20 yards used to be the hot spot. so i think we'll try furthur up the beach next time to see if it has any better features in close that would hold fish  . all in all not a bad wee session. nothing of any size to talk of but still plenty to keep us entertained    . there were 2 guys to our left who seemed to be getting a few too so it was'nt all bad :P . just a pity there was nothing a bit bigger about, but it sure beats blanking any day

thanks don. it was unbelieveably calm and mild that night, so i thought we'd better make the best of it as the rest of the week had a stinking forecast. :x looks like we're back to usual winter weather

sounds like you and jordan are singing off the same hymn sheet zeke :D . but at this time of year the lemonade and chocolate gets put away and the flasks of soup and stew come out  :P :P

thanks man. as soon as he's old enough get a rod into his hands man. once he's got a few fish he'll be hooked for life and you'll have the best excuse in the world for getting out for regular sessions    you'll just have to eat some humble pie like myself everytime he gets more fish than you

cheers ivan. the forecast has been a bit grim this week    hopefully it will clear up a bit for our club comp at portrush this weekend :) :) i'll give you a call at the weekend to see if you fancy a chuck during next week somewhere :)

thanks fenton. me and dawsey were thinking about trying a few flattie marks inside strangford lough in the coming weeks  . i'll drop you a PM nearer the time to see if you fancy a run out. dawsey has been chatting to a few people who have told him there are some decent flounder to be had if you're willing to brave this awful weather :D :D :D . if a few of us try some marks togeather it's gotta boost the chances of not blanking at these untested marks

crazyfish1983 wrote:Some session there al as usual (can you spot the jealousy??). Good pics as well!
cheers mate. believe it or not that spot fished pretty poorly compared with this time last year :| :| :| . but like i said the beach was all but featureless. no high sand bars or deep gullys to talk of. we'll just have to scout the beach out at the next set of low spring tides to see where the fish holding features have moved to  .

eyesreilly wrote:Nice session Al, you cant beat a bag of munchies   .
thanks dave. things are starting to get a bit chilly now, so the homemade stew and soup will be coming out with us from now on

cheers man. the biggest we've had off that beach was the 1lb 8oz flounder i got last year. but there are bigger ones down there. saw a pic of a 2lb plaice taken there a few weeks back    . it's nose and tail was hanging off the top of the guy's tackle box.   so there's hope yet
