Bait: Rag

Rigs: Running Leger

Results:Bass (4lb) 8) , flounder (4oz) :mrgreen:


Report:
Met Rory just as the last of the lobsters where coming in from their best efforts at kicking off on the road to melanoma. Set up and had baits in the water by 20:30 fishing a falling tide. No action other than a big sea trout jumping clear out of the water. Baits being picked clean repeatedly by small flatties. Things settled down just in time for two kindly gentlemen to come along and start spinning straight over our lines. :evil: (If you happen to be reading this, then cheers you should have stuck around).
Twilight/Nightfall at 23:30 and I get the lightest pick up and ever and decide to strike in whilst saying to myself, "Right, have a load of this you little flat bast..." when I connect with something a lot more substantial:- :D

Phil...well done on your first bass :) and the honest report...I'm sure that there'll be plenty more now :wink:
The comments aren't intended as a dig..it's just that the c&r debate starts every time a pic of a dead bass is posted so most people don't bother now.

Remember when the hook broke as I was removing it...same thing happened yesterday. Took a new one out of the packet and was able to break it easily so anyone using kamasan 1/0 baitholder hooks beware!!!!...there's duds out there.

btw...made up for the blank yesterday :D

Jeez. You should see it when I'm hunting fluffy rabbits!!! :D

And yes, it was my first bass. It led a glorious life in the harbour only to be steamed in teryaki sauce and spring onions and served on a bed of rice noodles. :P Yum yum. I'll be much more inclined to C&R next time.

Besides, it's not like it was some poor unsuspecting ling being hauled off a wreck!!

Ahh not really eric - just grumpy - cant get out fishing and the place is thronged with bass :cry: :cry:

congrats again, especially as it was your first Bass. i keep telling myself im gonna keep one but always put them back. dunno why, their not as rare as their made out to be. the 1st one is the hardest to get so no stopping you now.
the teryaki sauce, spring onions and rice noodles sounds good.

Well said Rory,on the c+r debate.You know my fishing practices and i certainly would'nt hold it against a fellow "angler" in keeping one for the pot,but unfortunately recently on this forum alot of people on both sides of the fence have been winding each other up,with blatant comments on how they cooked the bass on one hand and the other saying all bass killers rot in hell so too speak,live and let live.
This is the very reason as rory says why some people don't post anymore,why cause a load of nonsense about the rights and wrongs of fishing in general.Me personally I'm c+r all the way my decesion end of,same as a person who keeps their catch its called freedom of choice so lets get back to some proper stuff like fishing,as I for one am sick of some of stuff been posted recently :roll:

Rory was badgering for this anyway so here goes. This is straightforward to knock up & it really is a lazy man's recipe. It makes the best bass you've tasted guaranteed.

Recipe for Steamed Sea Bass in d'Oriental Styley :x
Ingredients
1 Sea Bass (that you bought in the shop, which was probably illegally drift netted :D )
1 Bottle of Teriyaki sauce
4 Spring Onions
1/2 Table Spoon of Fresh grated peeled ginger
4 Table spoons of Dry Sherry
4 Table spoons of Sesame Oil
Thread Rice Noodles

Cooking Guide
Set your oven to 200'C.
Take the bass , descale and gut.
Grate some fresh peeled ginger (you'll need about a half table spoon worth, you can substitute powdered stuff if you can't be arsed, but the fresh is freely available and worth the effort)
Finely slice the white end of 4 spring onions, take about 3/4 of what you've chopped & stuff the cavity of the fish (put aside the other 1/4 for later), place in a tin foil parcel. (You can make this by taking double the length of the fish and folding it back on itself before triple folding in a 1 cm edge of the other 2 side to make a tin foil envelope).
Pour the contents of bottle of teryaki sauce into a bowl and mix in the ginger. Add two good shots of dry sherry (or saki preferably but that's usually thin on the ground round these parts). A shot of Irish whiskey can be substituted if grandma has nudged all of the sherry. :wink:
Mix and pour into the parcel before sealing the tin foil packet by triple folding the final open edge. Place the parcel on a baking tray to catch any potential leaks.
Your oven should just be up to temp by this time so pop your tray into it on the top shelf and bake for 30mins. 5mins before the fish is due to come out heat some sesame oil up in a frying pan 'til it just starts to smoke a little.
Boil some water in a pan and cook the thread rice noodles for 4 minutes. Take your tray out of the oven and peel open the parcel. Drizzle the hot sesame oil over the top of the fish. :!: Watch out, this part spits. 8)
Garnish the fish with the last of your fresh spring onion slices and serve on a bed of the rice noodles.

If you're feeling braver you can go for a "Mafia Style" Bass. Substitute the oriental approach for a stuffing of peeled chopped tomatoes mixed with some fresh basil & sliced garlic and pour a half bottle of Budweiser in the parcel, substituting olive oil the last step. Also scrummy yummy.
