#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me jordan and minty

Duration: 12pm to 12am

Tide: high to low to high again

Weather: no wind, no rain and sunburn. in other words EXCELLENT :D

Bait: rag, squid, mack and sand eels

Rigs: single hook and lead on a 3 way swivel

Results: ME: 7 dogs and 2 shannys JORDAN: 7 dogs to 2lb 5ozs, 8 shannys and a 2lb huss MINTY: 12 dogs, 2 shannys and a 5lb huss

Report: it was our club comp today and it was another rover where any fish under 25cms would'nt make it onto the card. this would'nt be a problem for us as i had discovered this doggie mark during the week and all dogs were an immeadiate 45cm :D :D :D :D :D so we were quids in. me and jordan decided to get an early start and began fishing at midday even thow the comp did'nt start until 7pm. by 4pm we had landed a good dose of dogs and minty arrived just after i got my first bad fall on rocks while fishing :( :( :( :( i was walking over some weed covered rocks to bait up jordan's rig when i slipped and fell onto my knees, lifting the skin off them both :( :( . the only saving grace was that i was wearing jeans and the denim saved me from what i'm sure would have been a lot of stitches    so with blood soaked jeans i had to just hobble around until i got home and could properly tend to the wounds    . but being a true fishaholic i carried on regardless (allbeit at a slower pace). jordan had minty rooting around in the rock pools trying to get him his first minis of the year and the shanny's were only too happy to oblige. so we got back to concentrating on counters for the comp and minty was in fine form pulling in dog after dog. then jordan got a nice wee huss of 2lb which was smaller than some of the dogs we were getting. i think the heaviest dog fell to jordan at 2lb 8oz and it was great watching him struggle to get it out of the kelp and onto the rocks :D . jordan's bragging about being the only one to get a huss soon came to a dramatic end when minty connected into something that made a terrible grinding noise outta his reel and we were all in shock as a 5lb bull huss broke the surface and was duely landed     :P :P :P . it was quite an accomplishment to get a huss from the shore up this neck of the woods and a nice sized one too was just an added bonus    minty had no sooner landed it as jordan landed another doggie and we got a few good pics of them both before they were both returned to swim another day :P :P . all in all it was a brilliant day out with a good few fish and the 2 huss were the icing on the cake    after all the cards were marked up jordan ended up 3rd in the junior section and minty 4th in the seniors and i was just glad to still be upwardly mobile after my wee accident     but we had a great day out and there was plenty of fish all round to keep us all happy 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Nice report Al and fair play lads on a good haul. I noticed the doggies in your pics here and your last report are a much darker colour up your way. I hope your knees cleaned up ok. You have that James Brown impersonating comp next weekend, how will you managed that!!

By the way when I saw the thread name AKA Doggie House I thought to myself thats normally how my fishing ends up when I'm four hours late home

Fantastic session there Al, well done on getting the huss for Jordan and minty as well, just makes me want to go fishing even more now seeing the sessions you guys have been getting lately. I might head north myself at the end of the week and try a wee spot for them.
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

more like you've been mamed     did'nt get the fall on the video, besides all you would have got a shot of was the sky as i ended on my back rolling about like an upside down crab     it was my own stupid fault for not looking where i was walking    but then i suppose pain is a great reminder not to make the same mistake again

yeah, i mentioned that to eyesreilley when we were in wicklow that the dogs up this way all seem to be almost black :? :? . they must be living over more rock and kelp than sand and it makes for better camo i suppose.

cheers paddy, minty's huss was a big lump of a fish. there were better photos of it but i could'nt post them as they had a few features in the backround that would have given the mark away

i'm just gutted i caught the bulk of my fish before 7pm :x :x :x but it was great craic watching your reel scream for mercy getting the big lad through the kelp     . we're going back down there on friday evening for a session with dawsey, you're more than welcome man if you're free :D :D :D (i think jordan wants your huss   )

cheers conor, the fall was bound to happen at some stage with the ammount of time we spend fishing    all the guys i've talked to who have been fishing a few years all have a story about a bad fall they've had at some stage, i suppose it's a rite of passage as a sea angler to have the odd fall.    but at least it was only a flesh wound :P

cheers stevie. sorry to hear you had to leave the comp with a migraine. fra ended up fishing beside the guy who won the biggest fish pool with a 60cm pollack

AndrewF33 wrote:Did yous loose much gear on the mark ?

loads man. if you did'nt get a fish you lost your hook or lead. or lost the hook lead and fish    . but that's where the fish were. you just had to take the tackle loss on the chin, re rig and cast back out again   . i'd say that for every fish that was landed one was lost to the kelp. and that was with reels loaded with 50lb braid  but with fishing like that it's an acceptable loss to take
