GREYSTONES 24-01-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:4-7.30pm

Tide:rising

Weather:windy, wet later on but mild enough

Bait:frozen mack, squid, crab and a couple of lug

Rigs:3 hook flappers

Results:2 flounder and 1 whiting

Report:Went to Greystones with some leftover bait from friday in Wicklow harbour. Got dropped off by the missus with a promise to collect me in a few hours so i made my way down to the rocks. Could see a few guys fishing at the steps but i was surprised that there wasnt anyone at the rocks. I got set up at the lower level of the rocks as the tide was out and wasnt too breezy, but the wind started to pick up and after a while i had to move some of the gear higher up. I got a flounder on the top hook of a 3 hook flapper, and he took it as i retrieved the bait(couple of lug ) slowly in. I was delighted with him and took a pic and put him back in. As it got dark i lit my lamp, ignition unit is perished so it took me a few attempts to light it,,,, 4 matches actually  .The wind was increasing at this stage and was blowing at me from the direction of the steps across the cove, south east. I managed another flounder and a whiting but by this stage i had moved all the gear up and i was spending more time watching that my lamp wouldnt blow over and break, so i decided to pack up. It didnt help that my nerves were shattered from seeing our not so little furry friends darting about every few minutes,,,i'm not saying they were there,,just that i kept seeing them    ,,where the hell was that nuisance of a dog thats usually there when i needed him. It was blowing a gale, wet, rats scurrying about,,,,,dont you just love fishing  Missus turned up to collect me "Have a good time?",,,,,,,,,,"Brilliant",says I  Funny thing is that i cant wait to go again

Great report as always, I wouldn't mind trying the rocks myself soon.

Actually does any know what's happening with the harbour? I've heard worrying but not really surprising rumours that project may be shelved shortly leaving us with an abandoned building site for the foreseeable future.

As I say its only a rumour and I haven't seen anything to substantiate it yet, however my worry is that if this happened the site could be left in its current state, hoardings and all, so we may still not be allowed to fish the breakwaters and be left with the current eyesore. I just hope that should the developer decide to pull out that the County Council would have some recourse and that the harbour would at least be reinstated and the other nonsense forgotten about. I'm not saying this is going to happen, I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard similar rumours?

great report and pics as always dave 8) 8) 8) your little furry friends probably wanted to join in with the crabs for a bit of bait robbin         . they'd need to watch the back cast thow, i'm not sure what the aerodynamic properties of a fat rat on the end of a 3 hook flapper would be

That was me on the steps and a nice Russian fellah. He'd been there for 4 hours and not a bite. I told him he had to wait for the sun to go down for the action to begin. He was delighted as was I when the whiting started. My first time fishing there and Ill be back.Got four whiting which is ok because I had a blank on the last session over 3 marks!

Got all the whiting in the centre of that little bay with a little 3 hook boom rig. Put out 2 varietys of flattie rigs in the same spot but no joy. I had another rod out seaward but no joy. The whiting came to the mack on one to sand eel. The lug was left untouched. Is it generally a crabby area? because my bait was stripped quite quickly.

The other fellah at one stage attached a glo stick, the type you put in a float onto his rig and he was getting bites from whiting within seconds on every cast. Im going to experiment with that myself.

I thought you were digging in for the night wehn the rain drove me out!

Hi Cormdogg,,,well done on the whiting. I didnt stay too long after you left, the rain drove me out too   . I wouldnt say its particularly crabby there, no more than usual. Theres usually flatfish where you were casting into. I didnt get many bites and got the fish as i slowly retrieved the bait,,i was surprised that the flounder was caught on the top hook  . The two flounder were caught in daylight and the lug worked for me,tipped with squid. The whiting was caught in darkness and all i had left was mack and squid ,,,i think they just go after anything in the neighbourhood. The frozen crab was no use. I'll try the glo stick on the rig approach myself soon.

Here's a site for your tides www.easytide.co.uk, or there is a link on the shore questions page which also has the tides for the year!
