Beach near Killiney 8th January (Session 2)

#1 Post by beebub2 »

People: me, Stephen8wood

Duration:8.30pm 'til 11.30pm

Tide: Coming in for the first 45 minutes then on the ebb

Weather: Very clear night, almost no need for lights the moon was so bright.

Bait: Lug, Mackerel, sand eel

Rigs: 3 hook flapper & 2 hook flapper (1 up 1 down).

Results: Me; 6 Whiting, 1 Flounder, 1 crab. Stephen8wood; 9 Whiting

Report: I’m nervous about doing this again given my first report is still going and had a moderate step in at one point! Anyway, we pretty much blanked for the 1st hour. Tide was coming in for 1st 45 minutes. Started with 1 up 1 down and did a few short casts on the off chance there were a few bass lurking. But no joy. The sea was very calm with little or no surf. As the tide turned I changed to the 3 hook flapper and cast a reasonable distance. Almost straight away the fish started to bite. I caught the flounder along with a medium sized whiting at the same time so reeling them in was (relatively) heavy going, which was great. The flounder was a good size (I think). 31cm. Not bad for my first flounder.

You’ll be pleased to note that not only did all my whiting go back, but each got a nice bath and a bedtime story before being released. All swam happily back after that; one even turned to wave; bless.

The crab was unusual. Not very big but definately blue. I looked up 'blue crab' on the net and it wasn't a blue crab, which firstly I don't think are found here, but blue crab have blue claws and legs but dark shells, this fellas whole shell was blue. His two back legs were funny looking too; they had rounded ends rather than leg like ends that the rest of his legs had. The hook was just caught around his legs and didn't penetrate so he went happliy back too. He didn't need a story; he's made of sterner stuff. Any idea what he was?

P.S. On a completely unrelated and off topic matter, does anyone have any good flounder recipes?? :D :D

congrads on the flounder m8 8) . this will be an excellent year for you. me and my young lad have been sea fishing for 3 years now, so most of what we are catching we've seen before. but your first year is always the best. all these new, weird and wonderful fish you get on the end of your line and the odd marine life you will encounter :? :? :?    ah.., memories :D :D :D :D keep it up mate 8) 8) 8) . i've only cooked a couple of flounder and it's quite a delicate meat. it's nice grilled lightly or my favourite was when i cooked a pot of risotto and when it was almost cooked just place the fillets on top of the risotto, take it off the heat, put the lid on and allow it to cook for 5 mins or so until the meat goes white. mmmmmmmmmm, ffflllooouuunnndddeeerrr!!!!!!!!!!   just keep an eye on it, it 's easy to overcook it.

Does anybody know what is the best way to kill a flounder quickly and cleanly without taking its head off. The last large flounder I caught over Christmas jumped on the baking tray when I was putting it in the oven two hours after catching it. It was still breathing. I had used a heavy "priest" on the beach and a few minutes later it was still breathing and wanting to flap about so I had thought a swift, sharp blade between the eyes would be humane and it killed it,...for a while. That was at least an hour and a half before the oven. I'm not joking but the fish jumped in the oven too. I presume the only sure way is to remove the head after stunning it. If there is a more humane way let me know.

a knife in the brain would kill it quickly, nerves can cause the body to twitch/jump

the best way to kill a flounder is to cut from the back of the head down through the spine then grab the head and tear it off,the gutts will come with the head,if done correctly its all over in a second or two ,flounder are tough and a blow to the head can sometimes just stun them ,they seem to stay active longer in the cold weather too, :|

Thanks for that John. I googled the velvet swimming crab. I assume there are different types of velvet swimming crabs or are there different types of swimming crabs (if that makes any sense!).

None of the photos I could find of velvet swimming crabs looked like my fella. Apart from the shape of his back legs which were spot on. That said he was small so perhaps that's what they look like when they're young??

Thanks guys!

I see from another thread that some people have taken to giving the fish they caught nicknames. In that vein...

Boris the flounder was delicious :D
