West Clare Rock Mark 4th. Sept. 2008 - Wrasse and Triggers

People: Ross, Maeve, Emmet

Duration: 4 hrs

Tide: Falling

Weather: Light W, sunny, warm

Bait: Crab, Limpet

Rigs: Floatfish 6 ft. drop, bottom fish


Results:

50 to 60 Ballan Wrasse (estimated)! Lost count!
6 Triggerfish




Report: Tide was falling all the time. Several big Wrasse to Maeve early on float fished crab. Best 4 lbs.
More Wrasse on bottom fished crab to Ross and Emmet. A bite every drop until turn of tide. Good fish (?Triggers) lost as they dived under an overhanging submerged ledge. 4 Triggers to Ross best 2.5 lbs. Two on crab and two on Limpet. One Trigger each for Maeve and Emmet on crab. Most hectic days fishing we have had in a long time! All fish released alive.

Well lads, in the time it has taken me to write this report (all be it short), you guys would have caught 14 fish.... Thats f**king awesome fishing lads...... stuff I can only dream about :oops:

Them triggers look fab, me gotta get a trip over your way soon to catch one of them :wink:

Lovely! I got to get back over to Clare before the trigs head away again!

Edinburgh, Wasps, Castres, Harlequins, Munster and Leicester.......;-)
Now to add some fish:Cukoo,Ballan,Pollock,Coalie,Pouting,Conger,poor cod....mm needs more fish.. Mackerel, Dogie, Mullet Flounder...poor year so far....

how long do the triggers usually stay around for??

To be honest it's been a long time since we had a sesssion like this. In the early eighties we self imposed a 25 wrasse limit per angler per session after we discovered a real wrasse hotspot in Baltard Bay.
The Triggers were around last year up to the end of October.

8) great stuff lads, that was a powerfull session you's had there,
would love the chance to have a go at them tiggers, but have not heard
of any being got up around this end of the country :cry:
think i will have to do a bit of traveling for one of them :wink:

What sort of fight do you get off Triggers?, are they similar to wrasse?

They fight hard for their size. My best was about 4.5 lbs. Average 2.5lbs. They sometimes tear off sideways and have a nasty habit of bending hooks and locking themselves into rock crevices!

last year I was getting them into the middle of oct (I didn't get a chance to fish after that so it could have been longer), but they seemed more lethargic than in the middle of Sept. Don't know how early they show up but this year we got some in August.
