Species Hunt other than Fish

#1 Post by Paramedic030 »

Hi all!

I was out a few times this year and I came across not only fish but several other species of creatures that form this magnificent thing called wildlife ...

As anglers, we often meet nature's wildest and rarest creatures without even thinking about them. Thats why I started this topic.

Which animals have you seen where and when this year?

I can enter a sole dolphin and a sole seal in Killala Bay ( Lacken Pier ) in the last week. I always thought, they were going round in families or herd or whatever you call their groups...

Good fishing and open eyes!

Patrick...

seals.

#5 Post by barry murphy »

was out in dunmore friday evening and there was a dead seal on the dock with a crowed around.we found out lads had shot and wounded the seal and drove off leaving someone else to shot him again to put him down.this was at lunch time with people around.i know seals do a lot of damage to nets and fish in nets, but what gives fishermen the right to think they can do what they like they have the sea trawled clean and blame the seals for taken fish from nets,if there were fish fish for them to hunt they might leave the nets alone.

Hey Barry!

No trawler owner has the right to complain about animals doing damage to their catch. Isn't it the human greed that destroys most of this planet? We've fished the seas empty, converted rainforests into deserts and polluted any drop of water and breeze of air on the planet. And we complain about seals taking our catch?

And although this whole issue is too big to diskuss it in a small thread like mine here - if you shoot an animal regardless of it's kind - do it right for gods sake! What would those eejits say if you came up to their dogs and shot them and left them to suffer and die? They'd report ye to the gards or worse.
Fair play to whoever had the balls and the time to finish it off, that day!

Thanks for sharing that opinion with us, Barry!

I sympathise with the sentiments on the recent posts but watch the language lads. Just because the word censor kicks in doesnt make it OK.

For my own part, 2007 isn't even 2 months old but I've shared the fishing with Dolphins, an Otter and a Seal.

Ive also seen dead seals with loads of bullet holes in them and have heard of fishermen going to islands that are full of seals and shooting and cutting them up. They were obviously found out and arrested but its terrible to think this even goes on. Have a friend who works for the irish seal sanctuary and they can tell ya some stories

Not in '07 but we've regularly encountered whales while fishing from St John's Point in Donegal Bay. Caught a lobster here too one day. I've come across countless pods of dolphins (especially around Sligo - Easkey direction), and manys a seal in the Swilly

Perhaps you should have baited your rig with a little mutton and mint sauce?
