braid on multipliers

do any other anglers on this site use braid for beach casting ? i have used it for years and find it hard to fish with anything else these days i use 35 lb for most work i found the lighter braids prone to wind knots and prone to cutting mono shockleaders due to their thin diameter i find the cheaper braid to be a little coaser and less prone to digging in .any veiws or tips wellcome as usual :D

friend of mine that i do most of my fishing with uses 55 lb on his 525 mags, think its got a pretty similar diameter to 20 lb mono. cant ever recall him having any trouble with it digging into itself. one thing ive noted is that when it is windy/rough there is alot more movement in his tip than mine, i use 20 lb daiwa. also when rough ground fishing he doesnt get caught in the bottom as often as i do with 35lb mono straight tru. fish 12lb on a 5000 abu for light bass and wrassing, again no problem casting.

I put 30 lb powerpro on a multiplier reel for clean ground fishing and found it good, but the added "bite detection" was painful on the eyes! Every wee wisp of weed fairly battered the tip around the place!

I did see a remarkable amount of abrasion on the braid from what I though was a very clean mark, maybe down to using light leads and letting them roll around quite a bit...

Never considered using something as big at 55 but it is an idea as the narrower diameter did little enough on the distance - but then I was never a long caster anyway... did forget to thumb the side of the spool once which was a bad mistake to make! Beyond that, it works fine...

Interested to hear about the wind knots... had a few myself including when spinning and always put it down to poor technique, certainly that is what they are diagnosed as on site such as http://www.stripersonline.com

use pp on all my mults for pike, 50lbs mostly but 30lbs too for light worknever had a problem. also have 50lbs on a mult for conger hauling, again no problems

ya he seems to get on fine with 55lb, its a relatively flat so it sits quite nicely on the spool. have cast with it and it seems ok, just prefer mono, he still uses a 60lb leader tho to prevent abrasion.

i got 35lb spiderwire on mine and find the grip trailing of the sea bed immitates a flat fish very well...im thinkin ive a specimen flat on and all i got i f all

I find for boat fishing downtide that i loose a lot less gear than with mono

i have a wee bait caster loaded with 35lb berkley fireline xds. i use it for spinning, twitching and plugging and have to say its a lot easier to use on a multi than some of the horror stories ive heard would suggest!

having now used it for this im very tempted to load up the 525 and give it a blast. The bite detection is amazing im glad ive finally tried it.

i have noticed the odd time if snagged the braid will dig in on itself a little but i put this down to there not being a lot of tension on it as its wound on cuz im using very light end tackle, if your playing a fish though or hauling in weed from you first retrieve there no diggin in problems

would not recommend it on a multiplier at all. have tried it a few times. can be cast a decent distance too but i am not sure just how safe it is. can be handy over rough ground on a big pit fixed spool reel. wont snag as much as mentioned as it helps get the gear up and moving quicker. on clean ground the sand sticks to the braid and saws through your thumb, do this for 4 or five hours and it get very painful. perhaps a multiplier with a levelwind.

Personally, I wouldn;t go near it on a multi, for lots of reasons.

For example, at the compo yesterday I got hit mid cast by a freak wave. While trying to keep my footing I neglected to stop the spool when the lead hit the water. I got a small overrun which pulled out in about five seconds. I wouldn't be confident of the same outcome with braid.
