East cork bait choices

#1 Post by Donagh »

I can't get of peeler and lug for trying for codling down in east cork as I don't live near the sea and the tackle shops in Limerick don't have much call or don't sell either. Whats peoples opinion of mussles as a subsitute mixed with razor or squid.

Heard of people taking cod only recently using mussel(in East Cork) but you probably would get frozen lug in the Cork angling store or some of the other tackle stores in the city.I wouldn't know of any shops to get bait down East Cork direction.

Razor on its own or mixed with black lug, squid, mackerel etc works quite well in the absence of Peeler and fresh lug. Havent tried Mussels but no real reason why they wouldnt work as part of a similar cocktail. Massive baits work for Cod by the way, I was using 4/0 pennels and baits of nearly 4 inches long the last time I targetted them down there.

Frozen black lug can be hard to get in Limerick and they charge 9:50 for it here. Not to costly when scratching but its fairly rough on the pocket for cod baits. Last wrap I had was full of tail. Can't catch to much with a big lump of sand on your hook. I need to stock up in cork.

Pete

I asked you about the bait choice when we were down in garryvoe and it was good to hear you could stil catch out of the freezer. I was just wondering about mussles just to give me another option. I didn't want to be wasting my time shelling mussels if they aren't going to catch. I used the 2/0 penel the last day to get extra distance with the cross wind and shallow water at low tide.. I have fair few 4/0 penels in my rig wallet for fishing the Estuary but they all have 80lb bulk .9mm nylon as snoods in case I get a huss.

Give the old mussels a try with a bit of razor or squid wrapped with them. Should deffo be worth a try. Depending on the size of your bait 2/0 Pennells should have been fine TBH, I prefer the 4/0s for the really big baits though. Your right though about the price of the frozen blacks, especially when your wrapping two up with a razor at a time.... The black lug down here has been very good this year.

Fresh vrs Frozen

#6 Post by drseafish »

Hi Donagh,

Its been mine and few others opinion that recently fresh blow lug or peeler (if you can get it) is out-fishing everything else for coddling all along the East Cork coast. I have tried frozen black lug, razor, mackerel and sand-eel with only one coalie to show, while some great coddling were caught beside me in close on big lug baits the other weekend. I know of a recent comp on Youghal beach were lug totally out-fished all other baits. I am not saying that you won't catch on the frozen black lug or mussel, but fresh lug is doing the business and the coddling are still showing along the most famous beaches in East Cork.

Thanks for the advise. My sum total of fishing experience of east cork was last sunday and I do very little clean beach fishing so all the advise is appreciated. I'll try and orgainise my next trip so I can dig lug and fish the flooding tide but with it being down in cork I'd only be able to arrange a weekend trip so getting the right tides into darkness might be difficult. I'll try and get my hands on some black wrap to add to my the freezer stash.

Anyone point me to where I could dig for lug near Garryvoe? (send a pm if you like)

Donagh
