bass and rockpools

#1 Post by eric »

do flooded rockpools hold bass? around my area there are plenty of those, and on the beach there are a few bass near the rockpools . if so, is it just the same tactics as rockfishing or do i need new rigs and bait. do weather make a differense also?

In my experience Gazo, they tend to move off the rock pools with the outgoing tide. When the tide is in and covering the rockpools they are always worth plugging over.

I've seen them in the Pollack Holes in kilkee. definitely worth a go.
i know it's not legal but i have seen scuba divers spear fishing in some of the bigger pools with good results for pollack and bass.

I've never been able to find the legislation, but I asked a fosheries board officer once. Their view was that spear fishing for bass should be reported.

I guess the reasoning behind this is that although it's not against the letter of the law, it's against the spirit, since it's very difficult to measure a bass, check it's over the 40cms, and then spear it ;)

from what i can gather it's officially frowned upon! it seems that spear fishing while scuba diving is a big no no, while spear fishing with a snorkel and mask is a bit more sporting. i'd tend to agree with this view.
good point about the size limits though teacher. i suppose a bit of cop on and sportmanship and there is nothing wrong with bagging the odd pollack or bass while snorkeling.....

gazo, are you talking about the rock pools in Killiney and the surrounding areas, if so ive tried it and you loose to much gear, you could try floating a bait over the rocks at white rock or plugs there are bass there but not in great numbers, alternatively you could try bootherstown/blackrock on a flooding tide but they will only be small bass, better option is to head south arklow and wexford always produce for me and my mates but we only really fish them during the summer months.

alright, so theres no legislation - ergo anything goes

i can see the reasoning with the lenght of bass etc. - but im sure that is considered when they come across one and have a split second to take or not!

starting another rant here with an insular viewpoint - most these guys are foreigners and its for the pot - as ever

sorry for going off topic but ive always wondered about this lark!
