which reminded me of a great program I use called OziExplorer (http://www.oziexplorer.com). You can hook it up to your GPS (most models supported) and easily programme waypoints, tracks, routes, etc.
It allows you to load scanned images of maps (e.g. Discovery maps, not that I would encourage that sort of thing) and overlay your waypoints on the map. This gives you far more detail than the low-detail maps you generally get with GPS devices.
It also has a live mode so, if you have a laptop, you can get live positioning data from a GPS device.
It also comes in a Windows CE version for anyone with a WindowsCE handheld. This includes some on the "Sat Nav" devices you can buy for your car, etc.
