Skerries, Co. Dublin 30/10

People: Myself and Johny

Duration: 2pm-5pm

Tide: Rising

Weather: very windy and overcast

Bait: mackerel and squid

Rigs: 3 hook flappers and cliped down patn

Results: about 40 whiting, 15 coalies, poor-cod, pouting, 2 mackerel, 3 mega crabs and 3 seals.

Catch and Release:: Yes/No Yes, all but the 2 mackies.

Report: Got to skerries to do a spot of rockfishing but it was too windy so we headed for the pier for shelter. We had caught fish from the very first cast and the action got faster as the day went on. All the fish were quite small with the biggest in the 3/4 Ib range. All caught on mackerel strip tiped with squid. It was great fun apart from the lack of bigger stamp of fish. we lost track of the exact qty of fish.
The seals were really annoying and we had 3 seals take fish on the way in, the rod doubled over and we had a fight on for 20 seconds which was an experience.

All in all, a fun day was had.

Hi KK,

Yeah, fished it a few times, I found it quite snaggy. You would need good distance to get to clean ground, otherwise I would use a float over the kelp beds which can work well for the pollock and wrasse in season. Fished it to good sucess 2 months ago for mackerel and pollock. I find low water is the best, but you need to be carefull on those rocks, they can be very slippy at times.

What you catch the whiting on?

Hi KK,

Yeah it looks a hit or miss place alright. Never fished it but was digging lug on the Loughshinny strand during the summer. Theres an big kelp bed close to the peir which is teeming with crabs which could attract some fish I thought. Id be interested in hearing how you got on fishing this mark. Around to the left of the peir is very rough ground which looks good for bass or codling. Might give it a try next time I get out.
