10Lb Cod from the shore!!!
Hi All,
may not be the right forum but I'll bet it stirs the imagination!
I have decided to catch a 10lb Cod from the shore this year! I will be trying alot of un-proven marks in the attempt but I was wondering if anybody knows of anyone /anyplace that has produced such a fish in recent memory?
I know a guy in Waterford had a 17lber on Tramore beach in 1993 on Paddy's night but that's as far as it goes!
Any info or advice appreciated, and that includes " get real it won't happen"

Lots of rumours down on De Wall last year Keith, spent a lot of time there myself but didnt see one. Biggest I had was on the 6 but thats not to say they werent there...... I lost a few good fish on the way in on a reef that runs 20 yards out when I just couldnt get their heads up so maybe, just maybe.... Sure you know what they say, nothing makes a fish bigger than "almost" being caught.
Dunno if fishing from a pavement really counts as "from the shore" though.

Heard of a 12lber last year but reports were rife of numerous double figure fish but sure you know yourself, anglers tales and all that. I personally didnt see or catch anything near double figures. Odd that you mention cod being available from the boat in a mark and not the shore. Possibly something to do with the tactics employed, I dunno :? Might have a crack with a giant bait when the wall is on song and see what happens.....

I had one a few years ago from the north coast at 10.5lb ,lost another the next cast  also had them to 7lb from the wall monkstown ,big baits cut down on the amount of smaller fish and give the bigger ones time to home in on the commotion ,a couple of squid and 15 odd lug done the trick for me lobbed as far as i could ,also find the dirtyier the sea the better .
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

ya its odd alrite pete.ive had it happen with thornbacks as well. get quite a few about 200yds off ballycusheen near ardfield in the boat but never from the shore and we have put in quite a bit of time for them there. gonna try that mark for cod a bit more this year tho, only tried it 2 or 3 times.

A couple of squid and fifteen lug..... Christ Ronald, the bait shops must love you! Deffo worth a try though, will give that a lash come codding time. Anyone have any success with Mussells? Only ask as compared to the price of the frozen black stuff its seriously cheap.

I dig my own bait most of the time so cost doesn't really come into it to much ,the hard bit is casting a bait about the size of a cricket ball  especially when its blowing a gale . even the lug that has burst is used all bound up in bait elastic on a 6/0 pennel rig .

would love the excuse to use a 6/0 pennel rig...is there any marks up north worth having a crack at cod like this?

theres a few marks ,you just need the conditions right and have the right equipment (ropes ,floatation suit ,headlamps ,rock spikes , and a strong tripod ) oh yes and rod/reel.

10lb cod
You'll have agood chance of a double figure cod of the wall in monkstown on big lug and crab baits, try to pick a slack tide and fish 3 down and 3 back up. ive seen bis fish taken here the biggest was 17 lb in winter 2004.
you could also give rosdoonstown and the deep beaches a long this strech i crack in novemeber and december, they produced big cod last year coming up to crimbo definately up to 7lb maybe bigger, you'd also have the chance of a big bass here aswell. again big lug and crab baits must fish at night here though.
waterford harbour fished very well for cod last winter in my experience but i had nothing over 5lb but theres potential for something bigger.
hope this helps you on your quest, if i were you id stick to the top two marks and fish them hard coming up to christmas.

Howya Staff, Monkstown definitally one of your best bets,i witnessed consistenly big cod from last November on (6-10lb plus) but if you can go down on a week day, as every idiot with a rod is down there on the weekends :x ...saw a guy with a fly rod and a spinning reel last year trying to lob a pulley rig fully loaded, you can imagine the result  ....Big baits are the order of the day down here.

Bring Coaster down to de Wall Keith, we'll have a mini meet specimen hunt! I'm sure that De Wall is going to be pencilled on next years competition fixtures list ISNT IT LADS! Or would a venue that produces loads of fish be out of the question.... Only messing lads, but please consider it :D .
