Telescopic handle/ long handle needed

#1 Post by Norfolk and Goode »

Hi folks, I was wondering do any of you know how to make an extra long handle for a gaff or net that will not come apart when held upside down to get fish when your on a mark that is high up?

I need to make one that can be transported easily but when put together is approx 10 -12 feet long.

Any ideas?

Just an idea but could you use sewer rods?
They are generally a metre long.
I think I read somewhere that that's what Jack Shine used to use.

I use a coarse fishing landing net handle for this very purpose. i use a metal one with the gaff head screwed into the top but you would be able to use a strong carbon one once you pull it straight back up to you without bending along the whole lenght of the handle.

have gaffed conger to 21lbs this way and had no problems, you should be able to pick up a 10 foot one fairly cheaply

NG,

I used to fish a place in southwest Scotland where a very long gaff was needed, we used broom handles, 2 or even 3...drill 2 holes about 3" apart hole through at the ends and use a bolt with a wing nut to secure it, 2 holes stops it turning on you...when done loosen the nut , fold the handles down into one lenght and away you go, fits in a car easy.

The problem with a real teloscotic (small tube inside a larger tube) is...if you do get a wopper on the end, it may slip and come out.

Hope this helps.

Tom.

Cheers folks, cracking ideas here

So simple really but I would never have thought of it. I was looking to keep the weight down for transport to and from the mark

What about a drop net instead??

Saw folding ones advertised somewhere. Much easier on the fish than a gaff

hard to get a big conger into a drop net though when you cant manouver it easily.

the tele handle i use cant come apart there are stoppers at the end of each section. as i said it has landed conger to 21lbs easy and we have used it to pull crap like trollies and bikes out of th canal too and it was fine.

Thought about a drop net Lee, can be hard to use on your lonesome and hard to get a large fish into also. Would be worth a look though

you could also screw out the gaff and screw in a carp/pike style net, or even a big pan net nead for landing wrasse pollock etc and then you would only have to resort to the gaff for bigger fish.
