Portsalon

#1 Post by Neil »

I'm off to a wedding this weekend, staying at Portsalon on the Swilly. Can anyone put me on to a mark in the area? Since I'm with She Who Must Be Obeyed, a spinning rod and a few lures is all I can manage to take (taking bait in the car will be frowned upon, particularly as I've the bride's two aunts to take in the car with me..) - any near pollock marks? My only chance is early before breakfast - needs to be near...

Fanad Head and Lighthouse is only up the road from Portsalon. Plenty of pollock, macs and other critturs. You'll get macs and small pollock of the pier at Portsalon too, try round the rocks beside it for better pollock.

John McLaughlin in Swilly Flies on the road from Letterkenny to Ramelton sells a good range of frozen bait. Could use that with the spinning rod for flatties in the surf on the beach at Portsalon. Plenty of fish in the Swilly so you should manage to get stuck into something.
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.
Fresh Water (2) brown trout, sea trout

Thanks - a wet line will go a long way to alleviating wedding party stress!

If you are trying off the beach, keep in as close to the skeer of rocks near the south end of the beach. I've often seen decent flounder taken pretty close to the beach at this point.

I'm not much help on rock marks in the area unfortunately. Tend to stick to the beach.....

I tried the rock cliffs to the left of Portsalon and I have to say it looked as likely a pollack mark as any I've fished. Unfortunatley, for two hours on Sat and 1 1/2 hrs on Sun, with a good tide I didn't get a single bite......Used a selection of hard and soft lures.

Thats odd, usually throws up a few. Was fishing another spot yesterday and found the fish didn't come on until around 7pm as the tide reached its height...bloody dead until then but ended up sweating for last of the daylight as the fish really fed hard. I've seen that with really big spring tides before on a couple of different marks, bugger all action until the tide reached high water.
