A lot depends on where you were fishing. Possibly mullet.

When I used to do a lot of course fishing I regularily saw fry jump clear of the water as a marauding perch or pike would slash through the shoal, maybe what happened to you was much the same, when your lead hit the surface maybe the shoal thought it was a diving gull/cormorant etc and used that trick?
Just a thought.

Fishing the Bridges of Ross @ the chanel. Just as the Lure left the water there was a big splash of a rising fish, didn't see what it was. Floated a bit of bait and instantly was into a fair size pollock. After he went back I didn't ave a bite for the rest of the session so I recon it was the same fish. Didn't think Pollock would do this...

I had a Pollack jump about 2ft out of the water and take my lure as it left the water and was hanging in front of me, while I was getting ready for my next cast...it was from a boat on a calm day in water that wasnt to deep, the other guys who seen it couldnt beleive it. I nearly lost me rod and reel, almost carped mefelf, this thing was about 5lb-6lb.

Quite a few fish jump out of the water, Sandeels, Mackerel most surface swimers, if something scares them.

i have fished 2 spots and on several occassions at each on a calm night at dusk or early morning fish have been jumping when i have not even been casting, then casted in the area where the noise was and caught small pollack.

I would have my money on it being Mullet. It depends I suppose on how many fish you saw jumping? Mullet are easily spooked by splashes (actually they're easily spooked by anglers too, tricksy beggars!) If this is happening regularly, take some bread with you and see if the fish attack it, if they do it's well worth having a go for them.

Thanks to a generous donor - have been using a popper this past few weeks.
It really does make fish jump out of the sea! Would say 25% pollack miss the lure whilst bass jump and take every time ( twice only ).

Have seen mackeral jump when shoaling.
