Lug and teabags!!

#1 Post by pollocks! »

Last year there was a thread on storing lugworm for later use. Well I froze them and salted them and I guess was a bit unhappy with the results, mainly due to the fact that it was like trying to thread snot (sorry for being so crude!) onto the hook. Now, what if I went to Lidl/aldi aquired a box of cheap teabags, poured out the contents and used the bag to hold gooey rag and attached it to hook with elastic thread....would it work? or do bass/ cod prefer coffee(!). Any thoughts or am I dreaming??

Just a thought....but how about freezing them onto/around some ready-tied hooks? If kept frozen with an ice pack or thermos until just before you are ready to cast, it should work ok.

Some of the guys who do a bit of fresh water fishing might be able to advise on the use of PVA net bags which rapidly dissolve in water? - I'm not sure if you can get it with a fine enough mesh....but it might be another option.

PVA bags are normally used with a much more solid bait such as pellets.

Hey anything is worth a try.

Whatever about working, I wouldn't fancy the risk of mixing them up with real tea bags

Yeah, PVA bags disolve pretty quickly once in contact with anything wet so wouldnt bother with them.
Maybe some stocking nylon from a pair of tights would do the job?

I did the teabag thing with mussels last year and it really worked. Caught feck all but the bait was beautifully presented going out (and unfortunately, coming back in too!)

gooey baits

#8 Post by kieran »

Hi

If you do want to explore this option, go to a pharmacy and ask for the guaze tubing used to treat finger wounds. It is thin and very flexible and you can cut it to size. Place the gooey bait (typically mussels in my case, par boiled to stiffen them up a bit) into the tube and tie off at both ends. Freeze on a glass plate with hook snood in place, scrap off when frozen and off you go. With buster lugs, I prefer to stuff them into a squid body, seal it with shirring elastic and freeze the lot - excellent cod bait for the winter, and it casts a dream owing to the aerodynamic squid body...

FWIW...

gauze

i've seen that gauze trick done with all sorts of sloppy bait it certainly works for bigger fish cod haddock but never seen it work on small stuff.

oh and you dont have to freeze pour the bait in using a funnel tie off the end and hook it up like it was an ordinary bait

I tried the teabag thing on saturday night. Opend each teabag, poured out the contents, gave each bag a rinse and dried in the microwave. Put two/three thawed lug in each bag and whipped it closed with elastic thread. Presented it on a pennell with a sandeel and tied the lot down with mor elastic thread. It presented very well, cast excelent and held shape while releasing juices. I caught nothing!!!!!!!! Maybe it was just Bonmahon beach which was a pity cause there was good surf with a HT at 00.00. I will deffinatly be using this trick for cod over the winter months.
