new reel
hi guys. have just went and purchased an abu 6500 rocket. any advice on how to set it up to get the best performance out of it? also iv used it twice and have had a couple of birds nests at the start of the cast. when the mags are on its ok but distance is well restricted. have read about greasing the bearings but havent done it yet. have got a tube of diawa rocket fuel, is it any good? on a last note, after a session what are the main things to do to keep it clean, running at its best and free from any trouble? your advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Ghost, are you sure it's a rocket?? Rockets are not normally mag controlled, unless someone has converted it.
DO NOT put grease in the bearings, if the reel is new then just check that brake blocks are fitted and that it is not filled to the very top of the spool. The higher the line level on the spool, the more lively the reel will be.
The two chrome knobs on either end plate are used to center the spool. Therse should be set so that the spool has a very slight amount of side to side movement ( too tight and you will destroy the bearings  )
If you are still having problems, send me a pm and will meet up if you want and explain in more detail.
Hope this helps

Lee has covered it all except for the after fishing care.
All you need to do on a weekly basis is rinse in cold fresh water to remove all excess salt and the wipe down with a rag which has a light spray of WD 40 or similiar. Dond strip the reel too often but depending on how often you fish it will need a total checK, clean and oil a couple of times a year.
