Ballinskelligs Bass

#1 Post by snapperdaz »

Caught this nice 9.2lb Bass on a trip to Ballinskelligs in Late April. Fished the hour leading upto high tide using unweighted whole squid baits with a single 6/0 hook. I made a short cast from shore put the rod down to crack a beer and as soon as i picked the rod up again off she went, needless to say i had to ditch the freshly cracked tinny as this thing took off like a rocket!!!!

Gorgeous fish mate well done, dont think you would have been too bothered about the tinny in the end though :)

Excellent fish mate. Well done. And in very calm weather as well. What time of the day was it caught.

Ballinskelligs is in deepest darkest kerry. Between Waterville and Valentia Island. Nice fish snapperdaz!

G'Day Guys,

She was caught right on high tide around 7pm, was hardly a breath of wind and full sun, hence perfect weather for a cold beer. She went back very well, think i may have hooked her or her mate again shortly after but the hook pulled so called it quits and celebrated the afternoons fishing in the pub.

We bow before you!

We bow before you indeed snapperdaz. It's really good to hear that the fish went back well. This is especially important considering the dwindling stocks of this beautiful and highly important Irish sport fish. What adds to the importance of releasing this fish is that because it's a larger fish the eggs it produces will be high in quantity and also high in quantity. Anyway, in this day of age is there any real need to kill a fish of such beauty. Think of all the future days of enjoyment it will give others and maybe you again some time. Compare all this future pleasure and excitement to a couple of minutes in the pan, a few mouth fulls and a belch; then it is gone forever!!!

Again, respect!

Very nice fish. Do you fish there often and if so, whats the catching been like in general this year?

Try to make the trip down as often as possible but its a fair old haul from Dublin just for the weekend. I think the whole are fishes very well if you pick your tides, target species and spots. Usual manage to get amongst a few bass on each trip but i have had some helpful advice from the locals down that way.Doggies can be a big problem when targetting bass in certain areas. There is also some great pollock fishing to be had... got these on my last trip....

Hey petekd, was 3 of us throwing lures at them for a couple of hours wasn't a red hot bite but we managed around 10. Kept the 2 biggest for the table one on the right is prob around 5-6lb, never put them on the lie detector though :?: I lost one very decent pollock, cranked him to the surface quickly but he gave one monster run got back down to the bottom, ruined my new Daiwa reel trying to get him back out
