#1 Post by fenitbob »

Hi all
didn't know where to put this so am posting it here
just recieved the following email to my hotmail account

When people break our policies, violate consumer trust and the law of the land, eBay and PayPal work with law enforcement throughout the world to apprehend and prosecute fraudsters. Our diligence in this area is evidenced by the arrests that are made and the trust that is built both within the community and with law enforcement. Most importantly, we do this without compromising our commitment to our member's privacy. eBay, Inc., has established a Fraud Investigations Team (FIT) to promote safe use of our platforms, and to collaborate with law enforcement throughout the world to enforce policies, prosecute fraudsters and help keep our Community safe.

Valued eBay Member,

We are contacting you to remind you that on 07 JUN 2005 we identified some unusual activity in your account coming from a foreign IP address :capitol.guatemala-203-pc.in ( IP address located in India ) . We have been notified that a card associated with your account has been reported as lost or stolen and involved in fraudulent transactions, or that there were additional problems with your card.

According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by completing the following form or else your account will be marked as fraudulent , and will remain open for investigation. You will pay for the fees wich will result from the financial transactions between eBay and FIT ( Fraud Investigations Team ) .

I believe this to be Fake because
1. this is not my ebay mail acc
2. the mail came from ebay.reply-msg7114.com

3 my credit card is just fine
4. i don't use my credit card on Ebay
5 they did not mention my ebay username
6. they did not address me the normal way ebay address me
wasn't a member of ebay at the time mentioned
if this turns out to be true I'll let you know

reported it to ebay gonna report it to hotmail
I know alot of you lads use Ebay and I know some of you probably use hotmail

"Any money it's a phishing scheme. Avoid like the plague. I get loads of email asking me to confirm my Paypal details by clicking this link, or the sun will fail, my lad will fall off, somebody will kill the puppy, you name it.

Interestingly, since I started using google mail, it's spotted every single phishing mail and flagged it as spam, without fail - useful for those unsure of when some 419er is trying to part you from your credit card details etc

Have a read of

Another dead givaway is in the text of the message...

""According to our site policy you will have to confirm that you are the real owner of the eBay account by completing the following form or else your account will be marked as fraudulent , and will remain open for investigation. ....scamming 419ers can't spell, or, it seems, use a spellchecker. Ebay/Paypal have their own fraud squad, and have no right to bill you ir their system has been compromised. Just an attempt to panic you into clicking their link.....

Trust me, the message is a poor attempt at fraud. If you clicked the link, report it to ebay/paypal, etc."

Any suspicious emails for Ebay just forward the entire message to spoof@ebay.com and you'll get a reply from them who will tell you if its a scamming email or genuine.
