Catching Peeler Crab and Ragworm

#1 Post by KEC »

Hi all,
I've only recently acquired a beachcaster rod, reel etc so am very new to shore fishing (done some boat fishing in the past).
I've been told that you can collect bait (peelers and ragworms) from the Malahide estuary. All well and good you might think, but how do you actually get at the things?

Thanks in advance

Hi KEC

You can download a guide from the front page of the website and if necessary print it off. http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org.

Just click on the link and follow the instructions.
Once you have that done, post any questions that strike you back here...

Kieran,
Thanks for that - should have looked around the site more carefully. Guide looks really useful.
Can anyone confirm what I heard - ie that they are relatively easy to collect in the Malahide Estuary and where exactly in the Estuary they would reccomend (assuming you don't mind giving up such valuable info!).

ragworm

Hi

Many years ago there were phenomenal kind ragworm available if you dug in the filthy oozy stuff behind the church in Baldoyle on the estuary. They were snakes, we have one 21 inches long - it made eight baits! I know they did remedial work on the sewerage and drains and have no idea whether the ragworm died out or not as a result. Filthy place mind.

I have tried digging in the mud a few times and very quickly abandoned it. I only ever had a pitchfork with me which was useless. Do you use a shovel when digging slob?
