Digging for sand eels

#1 Post by michael mouse »

Hi I'm a new poster on these boards and freely admit to knowing little or nothing about sea angling. I have fished the Friary at Ards near Creeshlough for sea trout and whilst there have noticed on occaisions people digging for sand eels,so is this o.k [legal] and if so can eels be found on any of the Down or Antrim beaches. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Legal enough, but that's a criminal way to spell "Creeslough". :D

You do need a licence to fish for Sea Trout, though. The Baliffs do check, but not as much as I'd like them to. Far far too many unlicenced anglers taking Sea Trout from there. :?

You'll get sandeels on just about any beach. And as far as digging etc for them goes, it's legal. In some areas you may need a permit to use a seine net to catch sandeels, but digging or raking is ok. Just make sure the beach you intend to use isn't in a protected are etc.

The following two links will give you more information on sandeels than any sane man would want......

corncutters is a nightmare, haven't been there in years. Try Roses Bar for a decent pint.

Done the slotted knife thing, hard work but it works. Nets can be got...

Remember seeing this 'thing' that you would push along the sand with a net at the end of it to gather up the sandeels. Probable over the top for digging them for angling purposes
