BAIT : Cork / Clonakilty / Bantry

#1 Post by Pyreneenguy »

My fishing hols are approaching rapidly !

Arriving by ferry from France at Ringaskiddy , thought I would stock-up on Ammo sandeels etc on my way through Cork.

I have the addresses of several tackle -shops, just thought I'd ask
if you guys have any recommendations i.e some fresh bait as
well as frozen:- rag, peeler etc .

I always need quite a bit of terminal etc, but I appreciate friendly
advice and service ! I don't like handing over 150 euros to some
miserable old git who couldn't give a **** about his customers!

If anyone has any knowledge about the tackle -shops in Bantry
and Clonakilty , I would be very interested !

tackle shops / bait

#2 Post by kieran »

Bonjour!

All the main tackle shops are listed in http://www.cfb.ie
I've heard good reports about the shop in the village of halfway on the main clonakilty road out from cork...
Try contacting blaker, read and other locals on this forum for more information

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Common sense

Perhaps things are cheaper here............BUT............

when I go into a shop and ask for advice, I can't expect
the guy behind the counter to be helpful when I leave
empty-handed ! Works both ways !

Tackle Shops Cork

#7 Post by JimC »

Andy,
Coming from Ringaskiddy heading for Clonakilty the handiest shops are:

Half way angling ctr 021-4885894 (Dan) Web: http://www.halfwayanglingcentre.com/

Cork angling & outdoor ctr 021-4321000 (Trevor)

Both shops have a good freezer section. I would think they could organise fresh crab if you ring beforehand.

Have you checked out: http://www.dromagowlanehouse.com I don't know this guy personally but he fishes around beara.

John Angles is well worth a contact, he does both shore and charter out of Castletownbere, it's haddock time down there!!!!
John has a nice site with shore angling marks etc. on:
http://www.irelandseaangling.com

Enjoy,
Jim.

Thanks Jim !

The shop at Halfway is nicely on our route to Mizen Head so
I will give them a call and see what is available !

Collecting bait is all part of the sea-angling experience , but I like
to have something to fall back on.

all the best

hey ya. the halfway and cork angling centre are both your best bet. both excellent wit regards help, local info and bait. dan in the halfway reguraly has live crab and at this time of the year he may have live rag as well, although the lads in the cork angling centre had them 2months ago. if you are willing to dig your own the bay in clonakilty is stuffed with lug at the moment with the odd good white rag turning up. if you are heading to the mizen bring plenty of mackeral as thus is the start of serious bull huss fishing. also if you can get sum small hard back crabs they are deadly for the bigger wrasse out there.
shore species 2008(25):dogfish(3.1lbs), bull huss (12lb 2oz), bass, shore rockling, coalie, whiting, pollack, conger (22.4lbs),flounder, thick lipped mullet (4.8lbs),turbot,ling (11.2lbs),ballan wrasse(4.5lbs), cuckoo wrasse, pouting, poor cod, cod (9.5lbs), dab, 3 bearded rockling, long spined scorpion fish, corkwing wrasse, plaice, trigger fish, sea trout, garfish

regards neil
