Boatstrand Clean Up

Make a point of bringing home at least one bit of rubbish that wasn't yours. Did that last week on Dunabrattan (mack bashers heaven) head near boatstrand in Waterford last week. Makes you feel a little better.........

Can I suggest to all anglers that we make a start here.
I'm not knocking anybody here but I am fed up reading about this problem without much being done about it.

I will gladly make up a few flyer's. Put a couple up in Dunabrattan (boatstrand) and give a few to the local clubs if we can agree a date for a clean up of this area. I'm sure I can get some local Media coverage and as I work with the coast guard I will ask them to come along to promote safety from the shore.

Time to stand up and do something about it.
Who's going to give up 2 hours of their free time and help me.

(This type of publicity for the club can't hurt)

I think its time for people to put their money where their mouth is.
If nobody is interested in helping out on this then there is not much weight to all the complaining that goes on about it.

But that said I'm sure I will get a response as there are a lot of anglers that use this mark and it can be quite bad (rubbish wise) at times.

If this works out maybe we could try to get a few clean ups around the country and promote the positive name that this site already has.

After all 2 hours is not much to ask and it could very easily be made a kiddy friendly day with a box of Lolly's and some coloring books which we give out in schools to promote water safety for the wee ones.

Hope there is a better response than you got te ariki nua but thanks for the input.

rubbish...

I think its an excellent idea, but don;t excpect me to do the 10 hour drive to be there - local anglers have to be persuaded to act responsibly and if that happens then visiting anglers can be persuaded to do the same...

Good luck!

I was down east cork last weekend (not sure name of the beach)but there was a large amount of bait wrappers and at least 8-10 dead fish(mostly doggies) on the beach. i'd guess it was either a comp. or a large number of people who left this crap on the beach. If it was a club they should practice what most of them preach and take their rubbish home. This only gives the anti's more ammo to get us off the beaches.

Jim,
Dropped them a line and the anti-litter posters are in the post. Thanks for the info.

Here's the up date.

The local radio station WLR FM will promote this on air and will send someone out with goody bags for any children which may turn up.

The County Council will provide gloves, bags and rubbish collection.

The Coast Guard will send a couple of people with safety booklets.

Ammo Baits are supplying anti-litter posters.

All I need now is a few people to do their bit and give an hour or two to clean up and promote this site which you all get so much enjoyment from.

I do a weekly fishing column in the local paper and I can put it there if you put a time and date here. I can also put it on the NTL community notes which is transmitted all over Waterford.
Being brutally honest I think the anglers will be the last people to lend their support because it is with them the problem lies, but I can tell all the local clubs and hope for the best.

Hello Sharky.
Agree with that. Not getting much of a response from anglers but I'm going to go ahead with it anyway. I would appreciate you sticking it in the paper. Ill pm you my number for details.
Cheers.

All I can say is that I make a tremendous effort to keep wherever I fish really clean and tidy. However I don't make an effort to pick up something that's not mine but it's a fantastic idea and I will start to do this from now on.

Best of luck,
John D

I thought you were way off when you said anglers will be the last people to lend their support. How naive was I.

To pollocks! and copperhead Thanks for your offer to help. I'm pi**ed off with the poor response but what can you do?

I contacted the County Council and Coast Guard today and told them that the clean up was postponed but I would take them up on this at a later date.

For now I will just continue to clean as I go. I hope the others reading this will do the same.

sorry things didnt go as you had hoped i thought you would have had a better response than i got looks like most anglers would rather just moan about the state of places they fish than do something about it.i emphasise the word MOST

Apologies for not being there but I was on holidays and only came back on Sat last. I am not surprised at the response as I see litter everywhere. Even the notes in the paper didn't help. Maybe the best route is if we could organise it through the clubs, I will talk to Barry who answered you and a few of our lads and I can TRY to get a few of the committee members out from all the local clubs. Maybe now that we have some long evenings we could get out for two hours some night within the next few weeks. People are less likely to give up most of a Sat/Sun to clean up after other people. Let me know what you think.
