Hello all,
I have not been fishing long but am unhappy with the way I have seen people leave rubbish at marks - and the the way that almost everything that is caught is killed and taken away. Is there a code of conduct?

Hi Alan,

first of all - welcome to the site - enjoy.

the rubbish issue is a real bug-bear of mine I am sick and tired of clearing up after other lazy-arsed anglers at marks around the country - some people are just too ignorant to comprehend.

All I can say is bring your own rubbish home and that is half the battle.

With regard to catch and release, I would return 90% of fish caught (only keep mackeral and anything I intend eating - although it is rare to catch anything worth eating).

Most anglers I know will return at least 90% of their catch.

At the end of the day it is up to you what to return but if you do not intend eating it - put it back.

Think it goes without saying that the majority of anglers will return a large percentage of what they catch, it is done for sheer enjoyment and satisfaction, where is the satisfaction of seeing some idiot kill undersized fish to feed his dog (i've heard of this several times :? ) or whatever? Obviously many people would keep the like of Macks for bait, this can be acceptable as they aren't exactly short in supply and in the end are put to good use for the person in question, only my opinion.

if youve just came back from portrush harbour i know exactly what you are talking about alan... it can be a real tip at times, and unless something is done about it soon, who knows what the council may do..

Ennereilly south beach is a mess, there is a bin of sorts, its more of a half a barrel used to light fires but it was overflowing and the birds and wind had made it worse.

what we should do is name and shame, the people who litter should be made or at least told to pick up their junk they leave behind and if they dont let every one know about it.

there is nothing worse than fishing a mark set in a beautiful location and having other peoples rubbish lying around all over the place. :( :( :(

I think its a case preaching to the converted on this forum (at least I hope so!) - from most experiences I've had with both the rubbish and the undersized fish, its the day trippers with their Lidl rods that do the most damage. For anyone even semi-serious about their sport, its in their best interests to return as many fish as possible and clean up after them, but for the rest, they seem determined to return home with a "prize", no matter how small it is.

Its only going to get worse with mackie-bashing season around the corner! :evil: :evil: :evil:

Yeah i know what ya mean! I fishing in Greystones a while ago and i was talking to some guy with his dog when i got a fish,He thought that i was being stupid by throwing it back and just says "Whats the point in fishin if your just gonna put them back???" I just told him that there was no point in keepin it cause it was tiny and he just said "sounds stupid to me".
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry :shock:

Make a point of bringing home at least one bit of rubbish that wasn't yours. Did that last week on Dunabrattan (mack bashers heaven) head near boatstrand in Waterford last week. Makes you feel a little better.........

Can I suggest to all anglers that we make a start here.
I'm not knocking anybody here but I am fed up reading about this problem without much being done about it.

I will gladly make up a few flyer's. Put a couple up in Dunabrattan (boatstrand) and give a few to the local clubs if we can agree a date for a clean up of this area. I'm sure I can get some local Media coverage and as I work with the coast guard I will ask them to come along to promote safety from the shore.

Time to stand up and do something about it.
Who's going to give up 2 hours of their free time and help me.

(This type of publicity for the club can't hurt)

Would it not be better to have a quick meting with the county councel? Fly posting I think is illegal....and I dont think it would work without the help of the local authority. I'd prefer to go in that direction.

Hello pollocks!
I have contacted the county council and they will provide bags and gloves for all that turn up. The idea is to promote awareness amongst anglers (even mac bashers) that they have a duty to clean up after them self's and not just ask the county council to do it for them.
Also to access this mark you must cross farm land and I recon that it only a matter of time before someone puts a stop to this.
Not knocking your idea but it not going to teach anyone to clean up their own s**t.
