fishing comp min sizes

Hi all
Can anyone tell me the min. sizes in comps. We have small club in work and are still fishing the old fed rules (300 mm for round and 250mm for flats)

Hi beachboy, That's minimum fish sizes that my club adheres to still. I really don't think it matters as long as all in the competition knows what your agreed sizes are and abides by it. In England some of the competitions are measure all and release, although I personally think this can be hard on the fish if you catch any. By that I mean anglers have a tendency to scale down to very small hooks etc for scratching and if you are catching a load of e.g. flounder that are smaller that you hand well then there is bound to be a great deal that don't make it back alive. That's my view around it, I'm sure most anglers have there own views. You will probably find there is no right and wrong answer to it anyway!

Club I fish with use the same sizes although in the last half dozen comps fish that made those sizes were far and few between.

Beachboy,

Seeing that you in Wexford and most of your comps might be on the east coast I would suggest that you think of 20cm / 200mm for all fish, provided the comp is measure and resease. The SAI club here runs that size. We run it at whatever venue we fish. With the way our sea are been cleaned of fish of any decent size, I think the above measurement size is necessary to hold peoples interest in competition fishing. If people have to scratch a bit to get some results then that's what has to be done. For a small friendly club, I think this is a must so at least there are a few scoring cards to keep people coming back and enjoying the craic.

This is our typical scoring system if it helps.

20 points per species
10 points per fish
1 point per cm lenght of fish. Fist has to be over 20cm to count.
Up to and including half a cm is rounded down. Above half a cm is rounded up.
Dogfish get minimun size (20cm)

Mackerel, Herring, Sea Trout & Salmon dont count for scoring.

If a person caught 2 dogfish + 3 flounder 23cm, 26cm & 25cm and 2 Whiting 21cm & 26cm

3 species = 60
7 fish = 70
40 (dogfish @ 20cm) + 74 (Flounder) + 47 (Whiting) = 161

Total points = 291

GB SAC..
minimum sizes are

20cm for flats
30 cm all round fish
30 cm ray
mackerel (dont count)
dogfish 30 poits,
huss 45 points up to 75cm ( 75 points + length if over)
abide by catch and release

plus 5 points per species

Thanks for all the info folks! it seems to be a minefield out there. We just want to be in line with all other clubs and it seems the 20cm rule is the norm with catch and releasebasis. we are on Morriscastle/Balinoulart sat morn so Ill let you know how it goes

we found that the sizes had to come down due to poor catch results, ie people caught loads of undersize and few oversized fish, so to keep the interest reduced it to 20cm for everything, my advice would be to go by the sizes used by the province in which you fish.
