Fished SPA, Inch, Caastlegregory, just a few short 3 hour sessions as this was a social visit to the county. I had a HARD time and got totally defeated by the area. I know I was in the right place at the right time on at least two occasions (according to advice) out of 4 but all I managed was dogfish in the SPA area. Blank in inch and Castlgregory. Inch was in in middle of the rising tide and looked perfect but baits were coming back untouched. There was a lot of weed in Inch but this didnt seem to gather on the line or baits. The moral and confidence took a nose dive but as someone else says thats why its called fishing and not catching. I spoke to a number of people around Fenit and no one seems to be catching. Thanks to all who gave advice. Landers is a good shop and very helpful. As Arnie once said in Terminator

Yes Pat we were down at Inch last Monday evening and never touched a thing, we did have some trouble with the weed, saw a cracking sight the previous Saturday about 7pm there were around 8 bottlenose dolphins went down the full length of the beach, looked like they were chasing fish - 3rd breaker wonder if they had any bass?

Had tough fishing over the easter weekend too. Fished Inch Saturday morning with just 2 flounders for my efforts. HW that evening in Castlegregory only produced 1 painted around 4lbs. Saturday I spent at the SPA expecting good ray fishing - nothing showed at all. Managed another two flounders. Sunday I went to Cork and between 2 of us only managed a dog and flounder. Monday was spent on Slea Head and had really good fishing with lots of wrasse to just under 4lbs and plenty of 2-3lbs pollack with a cracking 5lber. Wednesday evening of this week I headed for one of favourite bass marks in North Kerry - conditions looked ideal but didn't even see a fish.
Tough bluddy going especially for down here - quite disappointing so far...

Another quickie if anyone else reads this. I worry (a) about casting too far when fishing surf beaches and (b) about casting not far enough When people talk of casting 30 metres are they really meaning 30 metres. My answer is to use two rods, one with a single hook as far as I can get it and the other with a 2 or 3 hook combo and vary the distance. Any comments

Its heartening to know I was not the only one having a hard time. Reference Castlegregory, is there a shelf out there as I lost 4 rigs on four casts on the way in????
Depends on exactly where you mean, if you were at the Trench (facing back in Tralee Bay) on the beach a couple of hundred yads down to the right of the stream then yes. There's a bluddy big reef there that can cause all sorts of problems, great feature too though, lots of ray here - usually!
