codling clone beach.jpg
Arrived at the beach an hour before low water. The sea looked very coloured and a strong gusting south westerly was blowing up the beach. There wasn't a huge swell but I wasn't sure if the rods and stand would be blown up the beach. Set up the tripod well anchored with the bag of stones. Got some shelter near rocks and set up the rods. It was starting to look fishable trying out a few casts although with the wind cutting across me ,it was cutting the distance down. Tried some off the ground casts which went well so that was the cast for the day. Set up an up and over rig baited with half crab and frozen lug on small strong hooks with a pennel hook keeping the bait straight. Out the rig went as far as possible and started to set a pully rig on the other rod. With one eye on the rod I spotted a good bite from a Good few meters back, ran to the rod and lifted into the fish. Felt a bit of weight and stayed deep. Gently bringing it through the surf a nice codling appeared. Well I was delighted and it was all systems go, or so I thought. loads of decent whiting and flounder during the next few hours . The pully rig with big hooks and crab produced the whiting and flounder and the up and over rig produced whiting. Enjoyable session, made me want to get back out soon when work or the weather doesn't get in the way.Clone Strand 4th Jan 2023
