We'd 16th

#1 Post by Tofish »

A bit late posting but anyway.. Dinner wasn't going to be ready for an hour so picked up the spinning rod and headed across the road.. Didn't bother bringing anything else apart from what was on the end of the line.. (A line through sandeel) cause wasn't expecting to catch anything.. Arrived bang on low water and there were 4 other anglers there with not a sign of a fish for 2 hours.. Nothing happened for twenty minutes but as the tide started to push in I got my first bite.. Reeled in a little seatrout not much bigger than the lure.. Kept getting hits but no hook ups for next ten mins then got hit like a train and fish on rod nodding and line being taken I thought I was on to a good bass but when I got it in it was a shad.. (Allis I think) tried un hooking on the bank but he had 3 hooks of the treble stuck in upper and lower jaw and scales falling off I put him back in and walked him up to a a fly angler who unhooked him in the water and revived him to swim away.. Nice little session before din dins

If that is from any river other than the barrow that is a pretty remarkable catch!

Mornington I presume. Very nice catch. It's great when you only go to put in an hour and you connect

The national biodiversity data has only 1 record of allis shad and that's from October 1973 so indeed it is a very rare encounter. Their site has a link to report any sighting of one and to upload a pic.

I. F. I. Have said it was great to receive a report of this fish and will include it in the national shad database
