Wicklow - 17-Sept

#1 Post by Boris »

Its been a long time since I had reason to post here. Yesterday I decided to take me day off and went fishing. The plan was to get to Bray and get to Viking tackle as soon as it opened and pick up some bait and supplies. it was then on to greystones beach. It was approaching high tide with a decent it of a shore surf. I'm a very amateur angler and haven't been out in a couple of years. But my reading of reports on here filled me with great confidence of what I was going to catch. Bass, nice flats maybe a smoothie.

Ecpectation did not match reality, the current was strong, I was getting tangles and weed caught on the line. This was not the relaxing day I had envisaged. After an hour I decided to up sticks and change location. I was going to go to wicklow harbour but on the drive I decided to go further south to Arklow pier where in the past I had great variety.

I started off with some feathers but no action the water was very sandy. Next I went with rag on a pre bought 3 hook flapper set up. After a few hours there wasn't any action there was a strong current and the rod tip was slowly moving but no bites that i noticed, however the hooks were coming back cleaned or partially cleaned. The sun was shining and I was fishing all was good in the world.

About 2:30 the sea settled and the day got even better. I decided with nothing happening I would change to my own rough and ready single hook set up that you guys would probably cringe at. However not long later I got my blank saver a pin whiting I think.

A while later this fella came in. Another whiting ?

I hit a snag and was about to call it a day but then it gave way and I nearly had had the biggest catch of the day but lost it at the wall. Not a fish a large gripper weight but I also had a fish on a nother little tiddler.

I finished off with a quick dip on the beach. No great fish but still nice to feel that hit on the line and not blank so all good.

Well done on sticking it out.I was on the rocks in Greystones that day,,,,nothing in close and was lucky to get a couple of flounder along with a few pin whiting. Choppy enough out there with a fair bit of weed early on.Don't give up,,,,you'll get those fish sooner or later
