Where: Launching from Rush, Co. Dublin
Who: Myself and my uncle.
Duration: 12:00-16:00
High Water: 15:06
Equipment: 7.5ft Shakespeare Ugly Stik 2 30/50lb
Bait/Rig: 5 hook hokkai rig with size 1/0 hooks and 9oz lead.
Conditions: Hot and sunny, slight swell on the way out and easing to flat calm as the day progressed.
Result: 14 Pollock

This was my first boat fishing trip, went out on my uncles boat and we caught 14 pollock, 2 were too small to eat and went back. Weather was fantastic and was a great days fishing! More reports to come!

Without divulging precise location/GPS coordinates, are you able to assist with some intel as follows?
1) Were you drifting or anchored? If drifting, did you get a sense of what speed (knots) you were moving at?
2) Approx what sort of depth were you picking up the pollack at? and in relation to the water depth were they right on the bottom or more mid-water?
3) Approx how far from shoreline were you fishing?
The reason I ask is that I'm wanting to start getting my stuff prepared for some drone angling drops with either bait or lures - where I will be looking to fly out 300-500m.

1) We were drifting at about 5 knots or so.
2) We were getting them a few cranks off the bottom in 50ft of water jigging hokkai feathers.
3) We were about 300m from land.

Hi Gonzo,
Many thanks for that intel. Very useful for my planning.
So 50ft = about 15-20m, not too deep, and 5knot current not too severe and actually ideal to allow a drift over some reef and structure. Best news is the distance from shore, as that's easily within flyable range for all three of our rods.
Me-thinks I would set-up with a party balloon as float with 15-20m of line below - using perhaps combination of sabiki feathers and weedless flukes spanned about 1m apart ranging from about 10m down to the end, and ending with a 1-2oz bucktail jig or weedless jig/fluke combo or perhaps a large meaty bait/whole mack or squid etc. The heavier terminal jig should pull the whole set-up down slowly through the water column and hopefully the balloon on the surface will keep everything vertically aligned and then catch a drift.
The whole setup may then pick-up anything from mackerel in mid-water to any of the larger bottom feeders.
Could be interesting reeling in a multiple hookup from 300-400 out, but hopefully the balloon should assist in keeping the mainline near the surface.
Will post results once we get out and trying.
