Pumping lug

Alright lads. So mate just made a bait pump had a go yesterday works lovely just wanting info or anywhere north county Dublin that has a decent amount of lug

Place is destroyed not alot of decent lug beds left most lads that pump do it on the big low tides

Gave barnageara a quick go yesterday not many about 15 in an hour. Gonna give rogerstown a go tomorrow hopefully pays off

north shore of malahide between the golf course and the railway bridge used to be where we went, but that's 20 years ago.
strand road from sutton out towards red rock used to have lug and was good for maddies too
you should also check out the small harbours - lusk etc. - at low water as they can have decent sized lug.

Have you got a pic or videos of the pump in action?
I could do with something to end the digging, have a hip problem.

I dont as me mate made it. I'll try to put some up but we got the idea after seeing a you tube video. Just type it in on you tube and there's loads of videos how to make one

I tried a few times in Seafield, Co Clare (Close to Spanish Point). Works great but digging keep you warm in this weather

Well, it's complete and it is definitely not a thing of beauty!

Weather permitting it will get a testing tomorrow at low tide.

Made it form 1.25 inch PVC, 1 metre pipe, slotted into T section, small section for a handle, with a cap end on the top of the T.
Glued together with PVC glue. Put a 8 mil washer on the drilled cap end as the bar would doubtless eat the PVC otherwise.

Two nuts and two threaded nuts or end nuts and you are done...

Silicone proved to be completely hard and the tube is the wrong diameter. Was searching around and found a grey plastic door stop, complete with 6 mil hole. Damn thing was tapered slightly but put it into the drill (on an 8 mil bolt) to create a lathe and some judicious filing and sandpapering later, its a snug fit. Might try some washing up liquid in the tube. Might not be as good as silicone.

Word of warning for people - don't glue in the end cap. The only potential flaw will be a lack of suction created in the pump / pipe, so if you need to replace the doorstop with a silicone block, you will need to have access to it.

I will put the photos up.... but only if the damn thing works! Total build cost was about €20 including the glue (€ 6).

I have lots of sandy beaches with no stones hence willing to try the PVC option...

And I have a fat trap that needs to be repaired (ugh!)...

You went the pvc route! I toyed with the idea myself. If your doorstop fails. I've also used rig winders cut to size with a hole cutting drill bit. Works quite well

First test - doorstop is too tight a fit, works fine coming up, but pushing it back down is a disaster. Could be in the gym.... adjusting it.

A bit concerned that the sand will be too abrasive on the PVC and that ultimately I will have to go with a metal version, but such is life.
Doorstop has been 'lathed' a fraction thinner again. May have to look at suction rings. 2nd test later in the week, weather permitting.

Guys, has anyone one noticed that some of the worms especially blow lugs can be damaged through process most likely due to the pressure and the last thing I would do it is to put a damaged one with the good ones... Wondering how can this be avoided? different angle or more gentle pushing?
I tried this only once, so this is the concern I got after using. BTW works great for rags.

Im no expert in pumping by any means but you should be able to reduce the suction pressure using the wingnut on bottom. I find the pressure does burst the blow lug so reducing it works better.

Cripes but the old threaded bar rusts damn fast!
I have taken out the doorstop and replaced it with a flat plastic disc cut from the top of a bucket.
Did a job on the other end too, replacing a nasty square lump of wood with a more ergonomic handle - the wood with chucks shaved off and sanded so that it fits nicely in the hand.
Looks far better, no idea if it will work. Well past 2 K to the nearest lug beds, so I guess testing of it will have to wait.

A bit of rubber foam mat works great ,just put a big washer either side of the piece of mat and use a wingnut to adjust the suction ,if you tighten the nut it squeezes the mat and increases the width of the mat .
