Porbeagle locations?

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

Hi all. Was hoping for some sound advice on the best place to target porbeagle around Ireland
Have a friend coming in August this year and will only have one day to try for them
Would be particularly interested to hear of any good hotspots in the north (esp. Donegal) but all locations considered
Recommended charters?
PMs very welcome
Thanks in advance
Charlie

Sticking to personal information, suspect Donegal is best county in Ireland for them but...

North Mayo coast west of Ballina is good, very rough ground and deep, can recommend a skipper called Donal Kennedy (086 817 4509) who knows his stuff. He uses Killala so less of of steam out to the fishing grounds. Just be aware that you need a chop on the water for drifing on a deep slick around the 50 m line out there. Have a plan B.

Have since been told that porbeagle are best targeted in the spring, that by August time they have moved well off the shore and are dispersed :| don’t think that it’s feasible now unfortunately
Thanks for the contacts though, appreciate it. I will contact these skippers regardless

They are there in big numbers in Spring, but you have a chance all along the north Donegal coast right through the summer and Autumn. The odd one is caught while drifting out deep for blue shark, and it’s not that unusual to have them rob pollack coalies etc when fishing reefs closer to shore during these months. We hooked one while jigging for Mackerel just outside Mulroy 2 summers ago, and we saw one just a stones throw from Melmore at the same time of year. I think if you targeted some of those inshore reefs with chum and livebaits in late summer you could have some success.

Kit Dunne has caught quite a few while blue shark fishing out of Kilmore in August and September. Generally caught on deep baits (fished very near the bottom). He’s had up to 3 Porgies per day doing this, although no big ones. At the very least you might catch a couple of blues. Bit far from the North though.

Appreciate that Rob, thanks.
Have had a chat to a few anglers now who have had success targeting porgies and they are all agree, that there’s still a chance for them in the summer along the north coast but that they would take a lot more effort and luck to get; the problem is that we would only really have one or two days at them when my buddy visits, so not ideal. Yeah, generally the smaller males in open water too.
Looks like a plan for a future trip in the spring..
Thanks again
Charlie

They are terrific fun to catch. Tenacious, unpredictable, aggressive, with great power and stamina. A proper sport fish.

Just to whet the appetite. We fish for mackeral a little further south on the same coat and I have seen one about 10 years ago moving at some speed almost under the base of the cliff,
