How to slow down a superMAG?

Got fed up with my ABU 6500 with level wind - stopped getting the tangles I used to get on my Ryobi multiplier.

Now have new toy....Penn SuperMag - blinding piece of kit and outcasts my level wind by 25%. One problem though. Even on full "Slow" the reel is mad keen to tangle.

Any ideas?

Try using a heavier line.... That slows things way down...

Change the oil to standard 3 in 1 that will slow it up nicely.

Cool - I'll give that a go. I'm working on smoothing out my casting - see how that helps as well.

the supermag shouldnt be nesting on you running on slow, its designed to be the most user friendly of the 525 family! infact some complain about them being too slow...

im not the most confident on the multipliers myself and by no means a smooth caster but normally i use the 525 mag slidy with 18lb set at slow , when i tried the mates 525supermag straight from the box i could ease the brakes off to around 4 or 5 and still have it running tamely enough.

try using 18lb line and suitable shockleader and a smoother cast may help quite a lot too.

I was hoping to stay on 15lb line - it's a pretty colour - but doggone it I'll try 18lb and see what happens - it's a good excuse to wander down to see Des in Wexford and buy some more tackle! Maybe a neon red line with a dayglo yellow shockleader. Fishing is all about image and matching colours. I mean what fish would select a standard mono line these days.............. :D :D :D

It sounds like your casting style flounder, see if you can get help from a local casting club or top caster. You can slow the reel down by thicker oil, red label rocket fuel or 3in1 as suggested earlier, take your bearings out sit them on an old spoon and fill the spoon with the oil. Heat the underside of the spoon and watch the air bubble out of your bearings. Once they stop bubbling the bearings can be wiped down and refitted, they'll be fully oiled and should be easy to control.

The super mag should have red rf in it from the factory. Might be worthwhile reoiling the spool bearings. With rocket fuel theres no need to heat the oil with a spoon. A couple of drops onto the bearings and then rotate them. I'd also check the mags are in as they have a habit of popping out. The line level should be at least a couple of mils from the top and you can always put less line in depending on where you fish to slow the reel down more. Make sure the the spool end float it tightened so the spool barely moves from side to side.

Having said that if your getting nests with the mags set to 8 on a supermag then it more than likely casting style.
