In the market for a new headlight. Any recommendations? Or anything I should avoid like the plague?

I'm using a petzel myo-belt at the moment . No complaints so far ,i coverted it to a normal size 6v 4amp hr to save me chargig batteries all the time ,but i am using it 2-3 times a week and even at this i have only charged the battery 2 times from xmas .
Think the battery pack that comes as standard will last for abour 80hrs using just the led's half that on full power with main bulb.beams about 80m on full so no shortage of light .

Shakespear Rechargeable.......Laganside Tackle, Dunmurray.....£27. Couldnt beat it xclent lamp.

you should try the petzel duo belt 14 led. i got one just before Christmas and have not changed the batters once. there is 3 light setting for the led and a zoom for the other bulb. its a great head lamp and really lights the beach up, good for digging bait :D :D :D

I got one in Dunnes for 14.99,forget the fancy names this is just as good,led 3 light setting,haven't changed the battery in a year,does a great job to.

depends how much you want to spend and how much light you require ...is it only for baiting up and watching rod tip etc?if so one of the cheaper led ones will do the trick.

I might have mentioned what exactly I needed alright. Something dual function - LEDs for baiting up etc and a small lighthouse for finding the exit off some of the beaches. Rechargable. It's darned dark up here these nights.....

Looking to splash out 50-100 sheets. There seems to be plenty kit in that price bracket, wondering what other people use....

speleo night raider £99.99 if its sterling£ !!! :wink: :lol:
it has an excellent beam with option of using either the 10 or 20w halogen bulbs.no leds though

Nope. Sterling. Most of my stuff is mail-ordered from the UK at the mo, so coin of the realm, and all that.

The Speleo looks good. Like you say, no LEDs so shorter battery life. One of the lads also put me onto this - http://www.fishingdiscountstore.co.uk/7.html --- Luxeon 3Watt/3LED Headlight. Sounds good, but no halogen spot.

Decisions, decisions....

if you stick to the 10w which gives you more than enough light the night raider goes for 8hrs.
with it being a 6v lead acid battery it is quite heavy and a titan battery universal harness would be a handy purchase along with it.

leds are good but there is no warning when the batteries go done the bulbs dont go dim

I bought a Princeton Tec Apex LED Headlamp last Autumn. The head light is made in the USA but is now available in the UK (Veals and other online retailers - just shop around for the best deal online)

The light has 4 ultrabright LEDs (2 on each side of larger LED), which are great for baiting up and wide angle, short distance illumination up to about 20m on high setting and 10m on low setting

The lamp also has a single 3 watt Maxbright LED which is incredibly bright and has an effective max range of about 50metres on high setting and about 30m on low output.

There is also a flashing light mode.

The head light uses 4 AA batteries (rechargeable >2000mA advised) and has regulated LED output which means that you get longer time at max light output instead of a steady decrease in output.

Burn times on a set of freshly charged 2300mA rechargeable NiMH batteries is in excess of 60hrs (mixed light use: 4 LED and 1 3W LED at max light outputsettings).

The light is very comfortable to wear and light. It is also waterproof to 1m. It comes with a 10yr international warranty

I think Veals are selling the light at around £60

It's expensive but I would thoroughly recommend it as I've used it all conditions and it has proved itself.

Steer clear of offers of multi-LED headlamps from Hong Kong for sakle on E-Bay: I have heard numerous reports that they are not up to scratch.

What ever you choose always have two spare sets of batteries in your tackle box, and if possible a second head light as backup.. and if you can a lamp or torch.. as you can guess i like to be able to see where i'm walking at night..

and if you use rechargables try to get the highest milliAmp AA's up to 2500mA and AAA up to 900mA will last longer..
there's alot of speculation between Nimh and NiCd for best power and charge time

Ni-Cd charge a bit quicker but the maxcharge doesnt last as long whereas
Ni-MH takes longer to charge but max charge takes alot longer to fade...

NiCd batteries are usually cheaper butitis worth paying abit mor for Ni-MH..

(used to work in electronics store, you pick up loads of useless info, like batteries)

I think that you should buy the best thats out there. Fishing at night can be made so much easier and more comfortable with the edition of good lighting.

2 of the best as regard to this are the Tiga SL 12 or Samolite HL 100F. I bought one of the Tiga's last year, it cost me a few euros but I am so glad that I bought it.

On the beach at night you can see everything around you very clearly. There is a wide beam for baiting up and all base work and a search beam that puts good light out to 150 yds.

Recently on a surf beach in Kerry my friends seat box got washed into the surf by a rouge wave and the contents disperesed everywhere. He had a fairly good headlamp but was it not for my Tiga headlamp we would not of been able to recover the vast majority of the stuff.

Another thing I have found it very useful is for digging bait at night. With the Tiga its easier to spot the Lug, Rag, etc than during the day.

If you are serious about your angling it is an excellent investment that you will be using hapily for many years.

Oh....and Btw...the Tiga SL 12 also....best pieces of kit on the market,headlight is lightweight,large dual beam(6v and 22v).Only thing is they are pretty pricey,i got mine through Veals,the postage really puts the price up as obviously the battery is heavy enough.I had a chat with my local tackle dealer and he now stocks them and are competitively priced. Remember though, if we are wearing portable lighthouses (LED, Halogen or whatever) on our heads and looking out to sea with them switched on, we could be spooking that specimen bass we've been dreaming about catching!!!!

Veals have run out of Princeton Tec Apex. I would recommend Nickle Metal hydride (NiMH) batteries: you get them in much higher power output (up to 2500mAhr) which means you have longer burn times. Nickle cadmium batteries tend to be less powerful and contain cadmiun which is a toxic metal (environmental issues for disposal).

I've used and seen other LED headlamps and this one is the best by far: unbeatable light output (for an LED), and consistent light output for a longer time. It's comfortable, robust and has a tiny (very low energy drain) that flashes for 24 hrs after last use and tells you the condition of battery (green-to orange-to red) as well as being handy for finding your headlight in the dark!

I'm not knocking the other LED lamps, just letting people know that there is an all-rounder out there that you can trust when the going gets tough and maybe your safety depends on having a lighweight, powerful headlight that you feel comfortable wearing.

The large 'bin lid' head lights like Tiga and Samalight are great and are top of the range for light output but need a substantial battery pack to power them. It's a question of what you need the light for and what you feel comfortable with: horses to courses.
