LRF. Antrim, Xmas 2016

#1 Post by chuckaroo »

Having recently been shown underwater footage of my local shore mark, where I saw a whole range of species swimming about, I decided on my days off over Xmas to focus on some LRF, a mini species hunt..
Armed with a baited sabiki rig and a little shrimp pot most days, all I really only managed was a lot of small dab, cod, coley and pollack, and not much else. But I also had a ss.sea scorpion, a shore rockling, a common dragonet, a 5 bearded rockling and a nice big shrimp (or prawn, not sure) amongst many types of crab.
Was hoping for a lot more species tbh and so was a little disappointed (I didn't even manage a pin whiting ) but it got the fresh air around me nonetheless. Mind you, I seemed to be catching a lot more numbers of fish than other anglers :)

Eight species of fish wasn't a bad return, I like the dragonet in particular, don't see them very often. I think that's a prawn, Palaemon serratus,, unfortunately the terms shrimp and prawn are used loosely leading to confusion in both everyday use and especially in salmon fishing. The Palaemon or prawn is generally bigger and more transparent than the brown shrimp, Crangon crangon while the Dublin Bay Prawn (Nephrops norvegicus) is bigger again and also known as Norway lobster and Langoustine. Here endeth the lesson!
2013 species; 31

2014 species; 27

2015 species; 28

2016 species; 32

2017 species;28

2018 species; 33

2019 species; ballan wrasse, blonde ray, coalfish, cod, cuckoo wrasse, dab, dogfish, flounder, goldsinny wrasse, ling, mackerel, plaice, pollack, poorcod, pouting, scad, sea scorpion, spotty ray, spurdog, thornback, tub gurnard, turbot, whiting.

you got a good number of species for the depths of winter - haven't got a dragonet in years either

Yeah, the shrimp of course are generally markedly smaller than the prawn. I should have known that it was a prawn, I just hadn't seen one for such a while :) I guess that it's the Yanks and the Ozzies that complicate matters! Can see why it's called serratus too..

Am not a massive lrf fan but seeing all those wee species is pretty cool, am definitely tempted to go out soon and add to that tally as I know that there are a lot more species there. In the wee video I saw wrasse, plaice, flounder, blenny and even weever. Loads of other possibilities too. Must do better.. :)

Hi mickser. The guy that took the wee video was from a dive club in Co.Antrim. A great video - very clear water and great visibility, he has taken lot of underwater videos.
But when I asked him to put some of his videos onto his Facebook page so that others could benefit, I really don't think that he was bothered! He doesn't seem to put them online at all..
There was quite a few big fat lobsters in the video too, he seemed to not want the local lobster fishermen to know about them and that's maybe another reason why he's not posting..
