Near Courtown, Wex. 25th July

#1 Post by bogwoppit »

My second trip out after smoothound having only recently taken up the sport again.

I was down doing a bit of work on Saturday with a friend so I thought I'd make the most of it and bring him along for a shore session, he's a non fisher though.

I called into Courtown angling on Saturday to pick up some crab, damn, all out. Got 2 boxes of rag.

I went for a walk around some rocks in the afternoon to see if I could pick up some crunchies but was only rewarded with one crab and 2 wet feet.

We set up the rods at about 7.30 pm, I think high tide was going to be about 1am and the there was not much wind or wave to worry about.
2 hook flapper at close range and a 2 hook clipped rig further out all loaded with rag.

Not a nibble for the first hour and matey was already bored so I fed him more beer to keep him happy.

The second hour saw us getting a lot of small bites and stripped hooks but only a solitary small eel to show for our efforts (me fishing, him drinking beer).

At about 10 I decided it was time to put out my solitary crab so I rigged it up on a pulley and fired it out into the gloom.

Matey was quite disillusioned at the stage and kept complaining that there wasn't even a nibble on the crab while at least the rag was still bouncing about. Kept asking why did we have to change?

I placated him by telling him that if the crab did go, it wouldn't be a little bouncy nibble and that I'd let him reel in the big shark.

About 20 minutes after putting out the crab it went off with a screamer of a take, no doubt about this one.

Shouted to Matey to grab the rod only to see him run off in the other direction shouting back "NEED A PISS!"

He arrived back in time to see me land my best smoothie to date at around 6lbs. The shock on his face was worth as much as the fish!

We packed up after that as I only had rag left and it wasn't doing anything.

Nice hound man! Think I might well try your pacifying with beer tactic too!
