people: myself and the da
time: 10:45pm - 11:45pm
calm night, well , weather wise
High water: 11pm
bait: rank mack
catch: dogfish and an altercation with an entitled cretin...
the report:
My folks and I were staying down past Louisburgh, in Devlin for a few days, the beaches weren't performing for me at all, but I decided the night was lovely and calm, not what was forcast, so it was off for some easy pier fishing. stopped at Roonagh but two lads were fishing off it and we thought not to crowd them, so headed on to lecanvey pier, knowing that it's normally a dead cert for a doggy session if nothin else..
got there, pier empty, setup up pulley and single flapper (first rigs out of the bag) , plopped them out off the end, and began the 5minute doggies..
then after 15minutes some kids in wetsuits came running down to the end, ....at 11pm, between I'd say 8yrs old and 14yrs old.. well spoken dublin kids. I was a little putout that they simply decided to pier jump constantly right next to me, even kicking the rod rest once or twice, but I left them be , as they're kids. their dad was with them, a tall streak of pish in overly expensive looking shorts, not once did I hear ' move back down a bit kids, the men are fishin', or anything of the like.I'd have happily let the kids take a few jumps there had it been A. Daytime, not 11pm at night and B.if they'd asked politely . If you know lecanvey, it's quite narrow at the end, maybe 4ft wide to fish off. anyhow, after 10mins of this, one of the kids keeps saying 'excuse me' to me, I was ignoring her, trying to enjoy the peaceful night fishing, I turned and she said she wanted to jump off, where my rod was, right out the front and off the top wall, landing where my lines were out. I said no, but kept it polite again as they are kids after all. this is when the big bird impersonator stepped forward with his 'eh, excuse me, you don't own the pier, they've just as much right to use it'...I explained that yes they did and they could have the entire rest of the long pier, but that we were fishing off this one small part of it at the end. he was not hearing it, kept stating we didn't own it, that they could do that if they want, that if we were decent we'd 'compromise'...we asked him what his 'compromise' was.....it was for us to reel in and move elsewhere. we just kept telling him that's not compromise, that we had arrived first, we just using the end 4ft, but he seemed like the sort of fellow that is not used to hearing no, not used to not getting his own way. the poor kids went quiet, perhaps somewhat scared, which I felt bad, but he's so very lucky we are polite and kindly souls, I know many other anglers who he wouldn't want to have harassed. he eventually lurched off, spouting that we were the most inconsiderate people he'd ever met. I think he took my reg or phone number off my van, whatever the clownshoe hopes to do with it , I do not know. the session was spoiled after that, we stayed on for another few dogs each, but we were shook at the audacity and bully tactics of the south dublin plonker.
still a great pier for dogs though. circle hooks, debarbed, make for such easy and fun sessions.
daire
As a side note, stayed in this house in Devlin, cracking house, great price, right above devlin north beach. the owners are real laid back, I highly recommend it. tell em I sent you if you book it. =D

That silver spoon pr*ck is obviously not used to getting his own way. He'll be telling the "goys" about the backward culchies he met.
Reminds me of a time myself and my father in law were fishing down at helvick head pier and a couple of teenage shaved head latchicoes insisted on jumping off the pier straight into our lines!

I'm surprised you didn't start howling at the moon.... That would have moved them

funny thing is I'm from North dublin! but I kept it clean , for the kids,no (or not much) profanity and no shouting and wailing. but was very tempted to go 'full north dublin' on him, though I'm sure he'd try suing me for emotional distress.

Sounds like you met Ross O'Carroll-Kelly of the Irish Times! I wonder if you showed him a 6oz grip lead and a 3 hook flapper with 4/0's and enquired how the fruit of his loins would look wrapped up in it, would he think again?
